JavaScript lets you supercharge your web pages with animation, interactivity, and visual effects, but learning the language isn’t easy. This fully updated and expanded guide takes you step-by-step through JavaScript basics, then shows you how to save time and effort with jQuery—the library of prewritten JavaScript code—and the newest innovations from the jQuery UI plug-in.

The important stuff you need to know:

  • Make your pages come alive. Use jQuery to create interactive elements that respond to visitor input.
  • Get acquainted with jQuery UI. Expand your interface with tabbed panels, dialog boxes, date pickers, and other widgets.
  • Display good forms. Get information from visitors, help shoppers buy goods, and let members post their thoughts.
  • Go beyond the browser with Ajax. Communicate with the web server to update your pages without reloading.
  • Put your new skills right to work. Create a simple application step-by-step, using jQuery and jQuery UI widgets.
  • Dive into advanced concepts. Use ThemeRoller to customize your widgets; avoid common errors that new programmers often make.

Comments about oreilly JavaScript & jQuery: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition:

This is a great book for absolute beginners to JavaScript and jQuery. It lays it out for you step by step. The problem I have with the book is that there are way too many errors in it. For example, I spent half an hour trying to figure out how to do two-dimensional arrays properly because the author got it completely wrong. This goes on quite frequently. What would have been a very good book becomes average with so many errors.

      Comments about oreilly JavaScript & jQuery: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition:

      To best utilize this book make sure you download the proper jQuery library (1.7.2 I believe) or else you will find that some of the examples do not work correctly. Understanding that you can't print a book as fast as libraries get released, leaves you with having to learn from the jQuery blog for all things that were updated.

      Comments about oreilly JavaScript & jQuery: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition:

      The book is useful to help learn jQuery, but code samples should be updated to use jQuery 1.9.1, instead of 1.7.2. Most samples still work correctly, but the event tutorial at the end of chapter 5 (for a one-page FAQ) no longer works. The toggle() function signature with two function() arguments is removed in jQuery 1.9. Instead, use a click event handler with a data(key, value) property. For example:

      $(document).ready(function() {
      $('.answer').hide();

      // The toggle(){function(), function()} signature is removed in jQuery 1.9.
      // Replace the toggle function with a click event handler.
      $('.main h2').click(function() {
      // Add an object literal, or (key, value) pair, where the boolean
      // value toggles between true and false.
      $(this).data('clicked', !$(this).data('clicked'));

      // Get the value of the 'clicked' key.
      if ($(this).data('clicked')) { // 'clicked' = true
      $(this).next('.answer').fadeIn();
      $(this).addClass('close');
      } else { // 'clicked = false
      $(this).next('.answer').fadeOut();
      $(this).removeClass('close');
      }
      }); // End click event handler.
      }); // End ready.
