Comments about oreilly iOS 5 Programming Cookbook:

Some time ago I have reviewed iOS 4 Programming Cookbook. When this one appeared I was simply curious how does new face of "iOS Cooking" looks like. And I am pretty amazed.

First of all, parts of the book were redesigned. Big plus here. First chapter was redesigned such way it now gently introduces into XCode and Objective-C development. In iOS 5 Cookbook, you basically start with very simple examples and move towards more complicated stuff. Nevertheless, I still suggest buying book dedicated strictly to Objective-C in case you haven't used this language before.

The same refers to Networking related chapter. It was really improved. In this edition, titles of chapters give you detailed overview of what you can expect in networking related sections of the book.

Operations and threads from "iOS 4 Cook Book" as well as the content of "Concurrent Programming in Mac OS X and iOS" book are now packed into single chapter: "Concurrency". If you have bought "Concurrent Programming in Mac OS X and iOS" you will find this material duplicated. However, in case of people who will start with iOS 5 Programming Cookbook, this is a plus, as you have everything in one place.

I enjoyed the style of the book before, and I enjoy it now. However, there are few things you will miss. First of all, when it comes to CoreData related topics, you will miss recipes for model versioning. And this topic is a must. Especially in a cookbook. Sooner or later, your data model will evolve and you will face it. Another thing you will probably miss are Instruments. If you came to place were the efficiency plays a role, you wont' find help here. These are the only reasons I am giving here 4 stars instead of 5.

I would suggest to a friend. Definitely.

Comments about oreilly iOS 5 Programming Cookbook:

The cookbook idea for development is a good idea. Define a simple relatable problem and show how to solve it. Basically, here are the steps and a simple set of sample source that solves the problem. The Ios4 book for did this very well.
Unfortunately, the version for ios5 is not a complete cookbook in the way that it needs to be. The problems are not always fully resolved to a usable level. An example is the section on the UIPageViewController. It begins to give a resolution to the defined problem by describing the protocol, and then it stops. The text even states that it assumes the reader is already familiar with what to do.
This is not as much a cookbook as a light reference book.

Comments about oreilly iOS 5 Programming Cookbook:

This is a life-saver. As I've said in my review of Matt Neuburg's book, it is a great idea to have multiple books to tackle any single subject. Nahavandipoor's Cookbook is one of the two which I use most often (along with Neuburg's). Do not work in Xcode without it.

The best way of using this book is as follows: begin with a tutorial book/guide, just to get you started (especially for Xcode); then this cookbook will help you ramp up faster by answering the questions which inevitably arise. It quickly shows sample code, in easy to digest, relevant, usable snippets, and explains them thoroughly. Excellent organization and break-down into a very useful table of contents; it has saved a lot of time for me.
While there are lots of tutorial and theory books out there, Neuburg's and Nahavandipoor's fill gaps which no-one else does, or does so well.
Again: I would not start with only this book; it's best to have a novice guide next to it.
The book covers everything from beginner to very advanced stuff.
