Comments about oreilly The HTML5 Sessions: The Best of OSCON 2011:
Upshot: If you didn't make it to OSCON, or never do, here are your lectures on HTML5. The best 11-odd hours that you can spend getting up to speed. With a snag or two.
I was really impressed with the The HTML5 Sessions: The Best of OSCON 2011 videos. If you really want to set the tone or need an introduction to HTML5, start with the lecture "Refactoring for Mobile using HTML5 and CSS3" by Joseph Lewis of Sandia National Labs. I was also impressed with Scott Davis' lecture on using Local Storage. Just these two lectures showcase the benefits of HTML5 and are worth the price of admission alone.
The other lectures on Forms, Canvas, and Javascript are more advanced but are accessible if you're versed in the subjects.
Though I didn't have any problems downloading the videos, one of them didn't have sound on my Mac despite using MPlayer, Quicktime & VLC. Check the Errata to see if this issue has been addressed. Even so, there's something here for everyone. Recommended.
Disclosure: I received the Media download(s) from O'Reilly for review purposes.

Comments about oreilly The HTML5 Sessions: The Best of OSCON 2011:
I am learning HTML5 and have been reading books/articles on it. when I came across the OSCON sessions covering HTML5, I thought it would be a good idea to learn from the masters. So I opted to review these videos. there are 13 videos in this set. Of course only a selected few of the OSCON sessions have been compiled here. Below is the list of topics covered in this set :
HTML5 & CSS3: The Good Enough Parts (episodes 1-4)—Estelle Weyl HTML5 Canvas Deep Dive (episodes 1-2)—Joshua Marinacci and Robert Burdick JavaScript is Everywhere—Stoyan Stefanov Creating a Scalable JavaScript Application Architecture—Nicholas Zakas HTML5: All about Web Forms—Estelle Weyl HTML5 in Your Pocket: Application Cache and Local Storage—Scott Davis Real-time Web Communications—Scott Mattocks CouchApps with CouchDB, JavaScript & HTML5—Bradley Holt Refactoring for Mobile using HTML5 and CSS3—Joseph Lewis Mashing Up JavaScript: Advanced Techniques for Modern Web Applications—Bastian Hofmann HTML5 and Mobile: Getting from Good to Great—Filip Maj
The videos are of great clarity. And it's like being right there in the conference minus the jarring bright stage light. the presentators have put great effort in keeping sessions hands-on. Beginners and experts can benefit from these sessions.
I liked the session by Joseph Lewis, where he literally edited through a site's CSS sheet to show how it can be modified to suit mobile devices. He also touched on the CSS3 features like round-of.
Estel Way focused on HTML5 forms in a clear element & attributes level. She highlighted the browser support and differences in element rendering as needed. The HTML form elements are the most widely used and understanding the nuances is very essential. This video compilation helps understanding this in Great detail.
The only thing I didn't like in this video set is this : each video is at least 300 mb and took me nearly 10 hours to download.
To state my review precisely : don't miss these videos. The only ones who don't have to watch these videos are ones who attended the session in person in Portland.

Comments about oreilly The HTML5 Sessions: The Best of OSCON 2011:
If you were not able to go to the OSCON 2011, don't lose heart. O'Reilly has done a wonderful job of recording the HTML5 sessions into this series. I was amazed at the quality of the recording and the content of the materials. Clearly, this series is presented by the best of the best techies. If you can devote roughly 11 hours of your time to go through these presentations, you will be well ahead of your peers. I believe it is extremely valuable to me. I learned quite a few new things related to architecture, technologies, and tips and tools.
I totally recommend buying this series or getting your employer to buy it for you. It will definitely improve your productivity, expand your thinking into creating better design, make your applications scalable, help you think about managing a large project, etc. I could just go on extolling the virtues of the presentations. I definitely look forward to next year.
