Matt Garrish
Matt Garrish has been working in both mainstream and accessible publishing for nearly 15 years, abandoning editorial dreams after falling in love with structured data. He was the chief editor of the EPUB 3 suite of specifications and also played a key role in the design and writing of the new revision of the ANSI/NISO Z39.86 standard for authoring accessible content.
There's nothing else online or elsewhere that comes close to the quality of the information in this book. The subject is inherently technical, but Matt Garrish does the best job I can imagine to simplify the topic without compromising accuracy. The book is a pretty quick and very enjoyable read: every publisher needs to understand EPUB 3.

Comments about oreilly What Is EPUB 3?:
As a publisher going to ebooks, this was a gift from heaven. Now if there were only a full version with complete book scripts for us neophytes. Thank you, O'Reilly Media: I learned how to design websites from your publications. Now I'm looking forward to more on ebooks.

Comments about oreilly What Is EPUB 3?:
I was expecting to need massive quantities of caffeine to get through yet another article on EPUB. Fortunately, none was necessary. This piece is incredibly well organized, insightful, and well written. As a book publisher, I can't recommend it highly enough. I don't know who the author Matt Garrish is, but the first thing I did after finishing this was to look for other articles written by him. What a relief--a tech person who can actually write.
"What Is EPUB 3?" should be required reading by anyone and everyone on your editorial staff. They will thank you.
What I'd love to see next from Matt Garrish is an entire article on formatting images and graphics for EPUB (B&W line art, photos, comic media, etc.). This seems to be a perpetual headache, given the diversity of display resolutions we need our images to be optimal on, from older smartphones to the upcoming retina iPad 3 and HD computer displays. What are the plusses and minuses of SVG in EPUB? How do we best future proof our EPUB graphics and images?
