Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

All the other reviewers have said the same thing, but the code in this book does not work!. I can understand if deprecated code doesn't work, but the very basic code doesn't work. I have 15 years of programming experience and find this book hard to follow. The only upside to the very buggy code is that it is forcing me to learn logging (debugging) and to research each item that doesn't work.

I don't see how anyone who is new to programming could get anything out of it.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

I just bout this book this week (Feb 3, 2014) and I was in too big a hurry to read the comments. So far this book is almost unusable after chapter 2. Once you get into the oAuth and Fusion examples the code just completely breaks down. The embedded links in the book to get the class and code examples do not consistently work.

I am sorely disappointed in this book. Having paid extra for the updates to the book, I would have expected them ACTUALLY update it. Alas, they have not and it is just too out of date to be effective.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

Although I agree there are mistakes, actually they assist in trying to rebuild the brilliant demos present in this book. This book is giving me great ideas in how to convert existing spreadsheet based 'tools' into full grown applications which I'm sure will be very impressive and most of all easy to roll out and maintain. If it wasn't for the mistakes I would have given this 5 stars.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

I just bought this book in June 2013.
With a rapidly changing product like Google Script, a one year old book is bound to have obsolete information. The very first section of the book about UIApp is covering a Google script function that has been deprecated by Google as of March 2013.
I tried to build the sample code in Google and it will not work. For a newbie like me, it is quite confusing. I am lost about how to achieve the goals.
Also, the author is not writing to a newby like myself. He sometimes uses terms like FTP that I have heard of but do not understand.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

Neither the author or publisher are interested in quality. The code is filled with errors which are not covered anywhere. They don't even provide a complete, working code, you have to piece everything together which, in the disorganized mess of this book's presentation, is extremely difficult.

An abysmal failure as a teaching instrument.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

I was looking to using the book as a starting point to Google scripts.
The book is full of errors that should have been corrected before publishing. Didn't the author actually test the code prior to committing it to publication?
The code is dispersed with text which only confuses the learning process.
Rather than providing example code that is working, the author provides snippets of code that are hard to follow. To additionally confuse the issue, backward references are used to confuse the issues even further.
The book's errata is not maintained by the author which speaks rather poorly of his professionalism and dedication to his own work.
This book is a great disappointment to me. It serves only to confuse rather then enlighten the topic of Google scripts. I also feel that O'Reilly Books have not done the editorial work that was required prior to publication. This has left me with a caution that, what was once a great publisher has fallen below expectations.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

I would not go as far as to not recommend the book, but be aware the the number of coding errors is surprising. Something as simple as using the same variable name within the same block of code is surprisingly in error.

You may need to search other sources to make some of the exercises work. Other than that I believe the book provides valuable information and direction on the user of Google Script.

The ideas behind the book are good but after reading up to the first chapter, I kind of regretted buying it. It's full of errors and don't keep any standards. It talks about a code line in several places in a chapter but never writes the code line the same way. Very hard to follow and for the novice, finding the bugs in the code could be difficult. Hope I can get out of the book what I'm looking for.

I am an Educator with a large school system where my school has adopted Google Apps for Education with gusto!

We have numerous forms, spreadsheets, and Sites in use daily for collaboration and data collection.

There was maintenance needed duties including clearing old content such as upcoming events as well as highlighting duplicate entries by several teachers.

We found that we were now performing these daily maintenance duties. We sought automation.

Google Scripts provides that automation plus much more.

This book starts at the beginning by defining Google Scripts but moves briskly into Turbo-Charging your Google Forms.

It is a great resource for all Educators looking to use Google Scripts.

Comments about oreilly Google Script: Enterprise Application Essentials:

I agree with Scott B's review: while the book does walk through a complete and interesting example of a GAS application, it was often hard to understand where a code snippet should be added. Obvious errors and repeating of some topics gives the impression the author did not proof read the book. This is unfortunate because much of the material was helpful. The author should update the text from the errata or at least keep adding his edits to the errata page which he started then stopped about half way through. If the author is willing to make these corrections I think someone from O'Reilly should.
