Comments about oreilly Getting Started with Raspberry Pi:

The authors walk you through setting up and configuring your Raspberry Pi, creating and installing an operating system disk (in this case, written onto an SD card), and learning the beginnings of Scratch and Python, two programming languages that work incredibly well on the Rasberry Pi. Once you get through these tutorials, there is a collection of projects for connecting circuits, building a soundboard, talking to loved ones through a webcam, and other really great projects.

Don't get me wrong: this isn't just a book for adults or children. Anyone with access to a few tools and the Raspberry Pi could do most of the projects in this book. I see it as a great tool for parents who are homeschooling or unschooling children with an interest in computers, circuitry/electronics, or engineering. It's also a great part of the Maker community, and there are hundreds of user groups, community meetups, and online forums around the Raspberry Pi and it's millions of innovations.

For someone with no experience using a microcomputer, and a very new understanding of programming, this book has been unstrumental in my setting up and having a blast with my Raspberry Pi. I can't wait to buy copies for my homeschooling/unschooling friends and anyone interested in learning to program.

Comments about oreilly Getting Started with Raspberry Pi:

Have started reading the book and working some of the code examples, I am not a python guy but have run into at least one error so far. In chapter 3, the third code example will not run as printed in the manual. A search of the O'Reilly website shows "for" instead of 'while" which is in the book. Lets see how many more I can find. Otherwise the book is helpful for those of us starting out minus the erros, which I suppose is still good learing.

Comments about oreilly Getting Started with Raspberry Pi:

A good book to help you learn and get started with Raspberry Pi. If you want to order a Raspberry Pi package, buy this book and read 1-2 chapters will save your time.

Unfortunately, if you're not a python guy and you don't want to be. More than half of this book is use python as examples and demonstration.

Comments about oreilly Getting Started with Raspberry Pi:

I was expecting much more from this book. I bought my raspberrypi and was expecting the book to solve problems when starting and booting.
Of course, the book only shows first steps considering everythng going ok but i have problems with the network, the keyboard, the os, etc. I've found information in forum pages at raspberrypi.org but not in the book.
One chapter is about Linux administration, another on python. The arduino and GPIO part is ok but not detailed though.
The book is really a starting point and don't expect to find a reference for solving problems.

          Won't recommend it.

Great for someone new to RaspberryPi and programming to get started with, and equally an concise but really worthwhile reference for already seasoned Hackers and Programmers. Nice to dip into to quickly check something, or to follow a tutorial and have fun!

Comments about oreilly Getting Started with Raspberry Pi:

I have been interested in playing with a Raspberry Pi for quite some time and it'll be a while before I do as I have too many other projects to work on right now, but I decided to go through this book to see how useful it would be. I have to say it's definitely a recommended reading for anyone getting into this great, inexpensive computer!
It is quite detailed on how to go through everything from setup to advanced topics like using GPIO to control things and read sensor information. I also think the primer on Python is a great way to get people thinking more about using Python for things. I have been trying to get going in Linux for a bit now and found these instructions, even though it's for the RPi, to be quite useful. There's even a section on how to connect and use an Arduino with the RPi. I appreciate that section!
My only complaint and the reason I gave it 4 stars is the lack of thorough editing before releasing this book. There were multiple grammatical errors in the book that I found to be a bit annoying for a published book, although I know they can be hard to find. I also found a mistake in the code in one of the loops that would make it go forever as one of the variables is never incremented. You need to know a little programming to use what's in this book so most people reading this with some sort of understanding would likely catch the error but for those that are new to it may not.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and found it very useful. Now I need a little more time and my own board to play around with!

Comments about oreilly Getting Started with Raspberry Pi:

This manual should be included with every RasPi! It takes the new RasPi owner on a step by step setup process. It starts with how the Raspberry Pi boards work, then quickly moves into a mini-tutorial on booting and using Linux. It also has a brief look at how to program the Pi using Python, how to control the GPIO pins, and how to how to hook up and talk to USB devices. It sounds like it does a lot for such a small book, and it does indeed.

The book is sold as an introduction to the Raspberry Pi, and it delivers on that 100%.
