Berglund and McCullough on Mastering Cassandra for Architects
By Tim Berglund, Matthew McCullough
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: January 2012
Run time: 4 hours 5 minutes

This in-depth video training session introduces you to the Cassandra NoSQL database, from drivers to deployment. Through a series of group exercises, you’ll discover several new data modeling patterns in Cassandra that depart from the relational tradition in important ways. Learn how Cassandra delivers on its promise of horizontal scalability and fault tolerance, and how its log-structured storage subsystem helps it achieve impressive write and read performance. You’ll also look at some common administrative scenarios such as adding and removing nodes.

To put Cassandra in context, Matthew McCullough and Tim Berglund present a brief survey of other players in the NoSQL space, including MongoDB, Neo4J, and Redis. You’ll learn how Cassandra differs from the relational tradition, including its different approach to transactionality and how it impacts system design. If you want to explore Cassandra, or are considering adopting it in the near future, this video is for you.

Comments about oreilly Berglund and McCullough on Mastering Cassandra for Architects:

Berglund and McCullough always seem to produce high-quality lessons. Mastering Cassandra for Architects is no exception. They cover a lot of ground, they stop and explore areas when needed, and it's still valid for later versions of Cassandra. Worth the purchase.

Comments about oreilly Berglund and McCullough on Mastering Cassandra for Architects:

Matthew McCullough and Tim Berglund teamed up to provide this overview of Cassandra for Architects, with Berglund playing the lead role and McCullough adding color commentary.

Much like their earlier learning video, Introduction to Git where the roles were reversed, the two worked extremely well together and provided a great introduction to the approach of understanding and using Cassandra.

The format, informal training with a small group of attendees present and asking questions, provides an excellent bootstrap for newcomers to the technology.

If I were to level a complaint, insofar as you can call it a complaint, I hope that Tim has replaced his Greco-Roman themed Powerpoint slides. It should also be noted that the NoSQL technology landscape is changing very quickly and you may need to circle back on specific topics to understand both their relevance and use in today's world. (Yes, I'm thinking of you Super Column Families.)

Buy this - as a matter of fact, buy any Tim Berglund/Matthew McCullough training videos - you won't be disappointed and will definitely enjoy and learn from the two.

Comments about oreilly Berglund and McCullough on Mastering Cassandra for Architects:

This is just the best introduction to Cassandra and how the mix between Big Table and Dynamo makes it so special. Tim and Matthew really mastered this session and made it both instructive and fun; a must watch.

Be warned that the content is dense and requires a previous knowledge in databases. A first experience with a NoSQL database would be helpful although not necessary.
