Comments about oreilly Effective Monitoring and Alerting:

This book was of interest as where I am currently working they are looking into setting up a new monitoring strategy to try and ease the task of monitoring and centralise the monitoring to one department. Currently there any lots of different products etc being used within all the teams, and they are all really doing the same job.

The book is well written, I found the book very informative, and it wasn't to hard to read. With the topic I was thinking it could be a bit much to take but this was not the case, it stayed interesting through all of the chapters.

This book doesn't show you how to set a system up, or exactly what tools you should use, if you are looking for that then this book won't show you that.

If you are new to gathering and studying performance/system metrics then this book is a introduction that then continues to go deeper into the subject.

The main chapters in the book are Monitoring, Alerting, Scaling, Monitoring System Automation, The Work environment, Measuring Success, The principles.

This book describes an effective data-driven approach that could help to enable you to maintain high availability and deliver a high quality of service.

Comments about oreilly Effective Monitoring and Alerting:

Very good for solutions architects, IT decision-makers and anyone else seeking better tactics and strategies than whatever they're currently doing with their monitoring and alerting.

The book doesn't exactly pay off on the upfront promise to make monitoring "effortless", but it goes a very long way in showing how to incorporate things like autonomic computing; data pipelining; and monitoring-based automated deployment and rollback; into any company's monitoring roadmap.

For large shops especially, if they aren't already applying variations of all of these modern monitoring techniques, they're probably overlooking opportunities to increase ROI and help their businesses quantify their operational KPI's.

Comments about oreilly Effective Monitoring and Alerting:

I've only read the first chapter, but I'm pleased with what I found.

Slawek is clear and concise. I appreciate the effort taken to define monitoring and alerting. This sets the foundation for the rest of the material in this book, and also helps me to think about the material more effectively overall.

Comments about oreilly Effective Monitoring and Alerting:

This book packs in a lot of power in its concise layout and manages to do justice to its name while removing the ambiguity involved in monitoring and its analysis.
Some of the best practices and howtos can only be instilled after a long experience in the deployment or administration field and are really worth it.
