Comments about oreilly An Introduction to iOS Programming, 2nd Edition:

Coming to iOS development from the Mac I found this series of videos to be very useful. Concise and approachable, they gave me just what I needed.

I would like to see this updated for iOS 6 / 7 soon.

Comments about oreilly An Introduction to iOS Programming, 2nd Edition:

As I said in the headline this review is for first edition which I finished watching recently. I think there won't be much difference in the second edition so I will drop my 2 cents here.

I have to say that despite my really good impression of Oreilly books which I love and read since 2003. The video material that is offered for sale is not of the same quality as the books. I have made 2 purchases of videos in last couple of years and both were not useful.

Regarding this one, the way the instructor talks and the way everything is done does not make you feel that this is something you actually should pay money for. The quality of material and presentation was really not as expected. I have seen some video tutorials from professional online training centers and they really were useful. But this makes you feel like you paid money to watch a video that you might find a better alternative for on youtube for free. I do not say I did not learn something from it, but it was not of expected quality.

That does not mean that ALL videos for sale on Oreilly are bad. There might be a couple of good ones. But for me, I will sick with the lovely Oreilly books from now on..

Comments about oreilly An Introduction to iOS Programming, 2nd Edition:

It is true that the advertised scope is delivered, here. All of the topics are indeed covered as advertised.

However, from the very beginning, the instructor rushed through each topic. It sounded as though he was quickly reading through a script in his spare time, rather than focused on ensuring the concepts were being explained so as to be understood. In fact, I could often hear him turning the pages of his script in the background, or stumbling over words as he read them too quickly. Many times, he actually sounded bored, sighing heavily as he read as if he had better things to do. I had to rewind several times to catch the meaning of what he was reading so quickly.

While this does cover all the topics, it's not at all a good learning tool. I would recommend looking at one of the books from the Big Nerd Ranch, and the iOS Build and Release book, by Ron Roche.

This will also likely be the final purchase I make from O'Reilly. I've not been impressed with their products (save the Ron Roche book).

Comments about oreilly An Introduction to iOS Programming, 2nd Edition:

This is an insanely great video for those starting out fresh with iOS Programming. iOS programming is much more complex than Android programming due to the large initial setup and licensing agreements. This video makes it easy to understand what exactly needs to be done and when. The author has made it look dead simple. Making absolutely no assumptions whatsoever! I was amazed at the detail oriented coaching that the author has put through with this video. It covers everything from the basics to getting your app prepared for sale on the app store and uploading it to iTunes Connect. This is so much better than reading a book. I was able to play the video side by side on a dual-screen with me trying out stuff in the first screen. It was an enjoyable experience.
