Comments about oreilly QuickBooks 2014: The Missing Manual:

I think the book is through and detailed.

    It covers all areas.

As a person new to QuickBooks it assumes I have an accountant's knowledge of normal entries for all transactions. It would be helpful if it listed entries that are made automatically for all transactions and what other entries should possibility be made.

Comments about oreilly QuickBooks 2014: The Missing Manual:

The book tires to be cute by using silly examples. In one case they justify not tracking custermer names by usinga tatoo company that works on gang members. Some business don't track names because there are too many. If you own a NFL football team you could in the past get away with just tracking quanity if tickes sold. But on that tocic there are a lot of companies that just sell tickets. Sports teams, ski areas, ammusement parks, golf courses, etc. yet this book fails to even mention how they should account for those sales. At the end of the day you know you sold x ski passes, y season passes and z ski lessons and you have a bag of cash, checks and credit card slips. Where do you go from there? Its not to a 'sales reciept' like this book describes - sales reciepts can not deal with multiple forms of payment.

This book does not seem well thought out and it spends much of the page space selling Intel's other services. If you don't know anything about Quickbooks, you can learn a lot from the book but it takes a lot longer than should be required because you have to plow through the qute filler. For example try reading about 'items'. You will find 13 pages but 7 of the pages provide no information. Then you get to 'service' and 'product' items and there is no definition about which is which that is not taken from the extreems. Hairdressing is a service and nails are a product, but what is a ticket? The answer could be either, but why and what are the advantages and disadvantages of either choice. The 7 pages of cute half filled the chapter while the necessary information was skipped. Same thing could be said about the sales tax chapter, yes merchants don't like it but how do we deal with a state that has a different tax rate on merchandise, resturant food and bar alochol? Its not mentioned? If I listed all the places where cute seemed to trump conmtent the review would be as long as the book

I've always used O'Riely nutshell series of books to learn programming and computer systems. I remember them as mostly being information dense and half this thick. Following that formula would have tremendousily improved this book.

Comments about oreilly QuickBooks 2014: The Missing Manual:

This book has most of the things that you will need to use Quickbooks and maneuver your way around in the program. I would not waste my money on any other books. With this and QB search, if you can't find it it can't be done. I just wish that they would expand the index to include a more precise listing of where to find things. They sometimes give two or three locations for the same item. It would be great if you could drill down deeper into a search than have to scan ten or twenty pages. Other than that it is a great book and I would never consider getting a new release of QB without the matching text.

If you are only slightly familiar with the inner workings of Quickbooks, or an Old Pro there is lots of good information within this tome which will only improve your use and understanding of the Quickbooks program.

Comments about oreilly QuickBooks 2014: The Missing Manual:

I read the book from cover to cover, skipping only what did not pertain to my business or my version of Quick Books. I found it a very valuable resource since QB has changed a lot since I last used it. The program is the same in ease of use however. I am very pleased with the book, it was very helpful and written with a sense of humor!. I would like to see in the book at the beginning the installation instructions (I found them on page 739)followed by a very specific list of what to do in what order. (I did find a brief list on page 476) I felt the book hopped around a bit on that score. I am very glad that I bought the book.
