Comments about oreilly iPad: The Missing Manual, 6th Edition:

Ordered the book as a hardcopy. I then read how and downloaded the book into an iBook application. Now I can go to the book electronically and use it interactively. I also find it very useful while doing something on my iPad to go to the index/appropriate page in the hardcopy to answer my question about what I'm trying to do in the iPad without getting out of what I'm doing. It's perfect. I also downloaded "The Missing Manual CD with all of the web addresses, practice files, etc.

Comments about oreilly iPad: The Missing Manual, 6th Edition:

I am very keen on the Missing Manual series, and bought the iPad missing manual (5th edition) as a matter of course when I bought my first iPad mini and found it to be a hugely valuable resource to gaining operational competence over the device (I do not have an iPhone so I was totally unfamiliar with iOS and its stark differences from MacOS). I bought the 6th edition when I heard of its publication as I had acquired an iPad Mini (Retina). I will continue to buy the new editions as iOS continues to upgrade.
It is invaluable in being so very systematic in its treatment of the features of the iPad operation with its very well chosen and most helpful illustrations, and one finds real gems in its "Tips" boxes.
However, I have been disappointed over one aspect: it is rather too limited in discussing the frustrating limitations inherent in iOS itself - the author deals with the "can" features of iOS very well, it is not nearly frank enough (for my taste) over the "cannots". I could not locate any explanation of the strategy upon which iOS is based, why it differs from MacOS in important ways. More specifically, I had hoped to find an explanation, for example, why documents are not free-standing, but are buried away in the apps that created them – and why Spotlight is so relatively useless since it seems unable to find text within documents hidden away in apps (when one enthusiastically downloads ever more apps, one loses track of where particular documents might be: a competent Spotlight is thus essential) and why it is such a dreadful labour to generate PDFs from Safari (in MacOS there is the Save as PDF feature in the Print command). The limitation of the dreadful emulation of Notes is mentioned, and one can feel that the author does sense its weakness but the I could not understand what he said about how one can generate the equivalent of folders.
Ms Biersdorfer's understanding of the system is mind-boggling, and I realise that the limitations in iOS are not her responsibility in any shape or form; it is just that I would have found very helpful to my own understanding franker and more insightful discussion of them (especially about the strategies inherent in the system). I also have at the back of my mind, that such discussions might also reach the code-masters at Apple to cue them into what improvements might be made.

Comments about oreilly iPad: The Missing Manual, 6th Edition:

The Missing Manual for iPad is a practical survey of the facets of the iPad. I felt that the explanations were rather terse, but overall,l, this is a good manual. It served the purpose.
