Comments about oreilly iOS 6 Programming Cookbook:

I like cookbooks and iOS6 Programming Cookbook is no exception. Author covers a lot of practical knowledge: basics of Objective-C, UI solutions, Xcode features (e.g. Interface Builder, Storyboards), concurrency, gestures, maps, networking, graphics, motion and many more.

Vandad presents material clearly, solutions contains screenshots, schemes, references and code to understand and implement it.

iOS6 Programming Cookbook is good reference book and I can recommend it to every iOS developer/hobbyist.

Comments about oreilly iOS 6 Programming Cookbook:

Here's the thing: I'm develop iOS application, but half the time I feel like I'm grasping at straws. It's very easy to slap down a UITableViewController and play around with UITableViewDataSource interfaces to get some basic tool up and running. What isn't easy is figuring out what the best practice is for using some of these tools. Google something on iOS and you get a whole chorus of somewhat noisy examples, you can reference these at your own risk but they don't provide the depth that a book like this offers.

When I'm developing an iOS application, I'll get to a point where I just need to calmly go figure out the details of something like UITableViewController. This book provides just that.

It also helped to have the C and Objective-C overview at the start of the book. Like many iOS developers out there, Objective-C wasn't my first language. The fact that this book has a simple refresher on language syntax means that I can just reference it if I have a very basic question about C or Objective-C.

Comments about oreilly iOS 6 Programming Cookbook:

While the 'cookbook' genre of technical books may seem increasingly outdated in a world with Google and Stack Overflow, it's still nice to consult a discrete resource where you know someone put time into presenting a range of topics about a given subject in a logical manner. The iOS 6 Programming Cookbook by Vandad Nahavandipoor is a good example of this philosophy in action.

Given the size of the iOS SDK, it's impossible to provide examples that cover every situation. Nahavandipoor does a good job in deciding what 'problems' the cookbook examples should cover: The focus of the sample code is on getting people started with a particular framework or concept. While the examples are presented in isolation from the greater whole of a real-world app, just seeing a particular method in action is useful when one is just starting to learn a concept. This approach helped me in the case of an Auto Layout method; just being able to see example code used properly helped address some misunderstandings I had about the parameters expected by that method. As far as my own needs, I found the chapters on Auto Layout and Networking to be the most useful for providing a good overview on how to proceed with using these frameworks in my own app.

As useful as the book is, the language can be a bit awkward at times (keeping track of copy for a 900+ page book is no doubt a daunting task). The description of MVC seemed a bit odd ("think of a model as a virtual copy of your application, without a face"), but then again, conveying the essence of MVC is tangential to the purpose of book. Still, there are places where the author could be more succinct, or added some sentences or phrases that seemed to break with the character of a cookbook-style text. For the most part these are minor stylistic criticisms, but the example code is also affected from time to time (an early example project has the reader edit the interface for a class named Creating_and_Using_Switches_with_UISwitchViewController). This verbosity could distract newer developers from the real information being conveyed.

Criticisms aside, I did find many parts of the book useful for familiarizing myself with various areas of the iOS SDK. Cookbooks like these certainly still have their place as a first-stop reference.

Comments about oreilly iOS 6 Programming Cookbook:

Just started reading the book. It contains good, clear examples. I learned some things even on the initial few chapters. The book also contains a large number of typos, and errors that should not have made it into publications. Recipe 1.17, for example, contains 2-3 typos/errors per page for several pages.

Comments about oreilly iOS 6 Programming Cookbook:

Developers of native iPhone and iPad apps are often faced with new tasks that stretch their skills. Sometimes it can be difficult to find good information to solve a particular problem. The iOS 6 Programming Cookbook contains a wealth of information about various development topics that can help app coding stay on track. The beginning of the book covers many basic subjects, such as views and layouts. There is a nice discussion of Auto Layout, which is new to iOS 6 due to the introduction of the iPhone 5 with its larger display. Other topics, including concurrency and animation, delve into areas that may be more app dependent.

The author offers detailed solutions and a discussion of methods and techniques that may be appropriate for each problem. Although the book may not address every problem you encounter as a developer, it certainly covers a wide enough range to be useful in many circumstances. It is an excellent reference and guide to some of the more important topics in this latest version of iOS.

This book covers a lot of useful topics, is well written and presented in a way that you can just reads small sections to get the info you need. It also presents strategies for dealing with problems rather than being a regurgitation of the language, API's or walking through a contrived demo app.
