Building Web Apps with WordPress
WordPress as an Application Framework
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: April 2014
Pages: 462

WordPress is much more than a blogging platform. As this practical guide clearly demonstrates, you can use WordPress to build web apps of any type—not mere content sites, but full-blown apps for specific tasks. If you have PHP experience with a smattering of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you’ll learn how to use WordPress plugins and themes to develop fast, scalable, and secure web apps, native mobile apps, web services, and even a network of multiple WordPress sites.

The authors use examples from their recently released SchoolPress app to explain concepts and techniques throughout the book. All code examples are available on GitHub.

  • Compare WordPress with traditional app development frameworks
  • Use themes for views, and plugins for backend functionality
  • Get suggestions for choosing WordPress plugins—or build your own
  • Manage user accounts and roles, and access user data
  • Build asynchronous behaviors in your app with jQuery
  • Develop native apps for iOS and Android, using wrappers
  • Incorporate PHP libraries, external APIs, and web service plugins
  • Collect payments through ecommerce and membership plugins
  • Use techniques to speed up and scale your WordPress app

Comments about oreilly Building Web Apps with WordPress:

I was looking forward to a guide to creating a full-featured web app using WordPress but this book didn't really do that.

"you'll learn how to use WordPress plugins and themes to develop fast, scalable, and secure web apps" I don't don't agree with that description.

It basically goes through a lot of functionality that you can hook into to change how wordpress behaves, but nothing like a full example of anything. For that you just need to go through the source code.

It was hard to follow the examples because there are no named files in the examples to reference to their SchoolPress application, just some sample code snippets that aren't always fully-working examples. I'm happy to dig into source code but give me some idea where the code should be or where I can see a good example of how this works.

I didn't think the book was terrible, just not what I would have expected given the title. The writing is clear overall.

I would suggest a more classic book on developing wordpress plugins to better cover the code behind the topics that I was hoping would be in this book.

Comments about oreilly Building Web Apps with WordPress:

XML-RPC is not very used today, now exist the JSON API and this part is missing in the book.
The Heartbeat API is not explained, the wordpress security development pattern is not explained enough, is explained only some techniques for a better security in a wordpress environment.
Woocommerce is not explained :-(

For the rest explain the basic of a wordpress system, explain buddypress, and other things really interesting.
