Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: November 2013
Pages: 952

Windows 8.1 continues the evolution of the most radical redesign in Microsoft’s history. It combines the familiar Windows desktop with a new, touchscreen-friendly world of tiles and full-screen apps. Luckily, David Pogue is back to help you make sense of it—with humor, authority, and 500 illustrations.

The important stuff you need to know:

  • What’s new in 8.1. The update to 8.1 offers new apps, a universal Search, the return of the Start menu, and several zillion other nips and tucks.
  • New features. Storage Spaces, Windows To Go, File Histories—if Microsoft wrote it, this book covers it.
  • Security. Protect your PC from viruses, spyware, spam, sick hard drives, and out-of-control kids.
  • The network. HomeGroups, connecting from the road, mail, Web, music streaming among PCs—this book has your network covered.
  • The software. Media Center, Photo Gallery, Internet Explorer, speech recognition—this one authoritative, witty guide makes it all crystal clear. It’s the book that should have been in the box.

The book provided me a quick startup on using WIN 8.1. Good references and the do's and don't's. I like the quick guidelines as to "why's." I recommend this book for everyone.

Comments about oreilly Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual:

Insanely great depth of coverage - hey, I can use an old Apple phrase to describe a book on Windows, can't I? Helping out family and friends using the stuff in this book will certainly make your geek friends go "Uh, when did you start working with Windows 8, like, the alpha version?" It's that good.

Comments about oreilly Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual:

This manual explains the Windows 8.1 apps nicely and makes them useful. Haven't looked up too much yet but what I have has been excellent. Detailed information is very hard to find in the online help for Windows 8.1

Comments about oreilly Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual:

When I were young enough, I'm used to work with DOS and Windows 3.1. Since then I haven't missed any MS OS and was pretty sure I know almost everything about all of them. But 20 years later I decide to refresh my knowledges by reading this amazing book. And I was surprised to learn alot of interesting stuff has appeared in Win 8.1.

I've spent one wonderful week by reading this manual and glad that my knowledges are update now.

Comments about oreilly Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual:

Written by David Pogue, qualified and popular columnist for the New York Times in computer science, this book stands out right away with a title that says it all: nothing "Step by step", nor "Ultimate Guide", even if it comes with a full coverage and gradual exposure.
"Missing manual" refers to the fact that indeed Windows 8 - as, now, 8.1 - looks fragmented and poor in the online help, probably because Microsoft has decided that its intuitive and friendly interface do not require too many clear and detailed speeches. The majority of its users will soon exceed the (modest) shock due to the drastic change compared to the classic Windows, particularly if they spent some practice with tablets and smartphones, whose interface inspire Windows 8, but many structural details and tips 6 tricks will remain ignored. Dave give a valid and effective help in both points.
