Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

I am an experienced software developer and have worked with iOS since version 2.0. As in many other platforms, I appreciate "cookbooks" because there are certain things I know I will need to do whenever I write an application for a new platform. This book provides a wealth of examples for beginner, intermediate, and expert programmers to use in their app development process.

I did run into one issue, with the chapter on Core Data (18). It does not explain how certain pieces are created, and seems to be based on a pre-release version of Xcode. Downloading the source code for the examples in this chapter cleared things up, but it was disturbing to find several pieces of absolutely necessary information missing. In addition, the author does not mention which version of Xcode he used - he simply tells the reader to download the latest and greatest from the App Store. While this advice works, it left me wondering which version the author actually used for the examples (since the feature he tells the reader to use in Chapter 18 to setup a project to use Core Data is not available in the current version of Xcode - 5.02).

Other than that, Nahavandipoor's examples are very helpful and I really do appreciate the number of different things he explains.

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

I am an experienced programmer in C/C++ and Javascript/JQuery, trying to write an IOS app using Cordova/JQuery, so that I don't need to try and learn Objective C and Cocoa.

With this book, I had my first Objective C app finished in two weeks. The recipes are relevant, short and sweet; perfect for an experienced programmer new to IOS. I keep it next to my Mac as a handy reference. 5 stars!

The only topic missing for me is in-app purchasing. New programmers should start with a more fundamental book, whereas experienced IOS developers might need a more advanced book.

A very good book indeed, but i wished the author had led the readers to actually build a sample application right from the beginning and not take everything bit by bit. But in General it is a very good book to read

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

This book is really helpful and per its predecessors, it is quite useful.

It is very disappointing though that the downloadable source code examples are not there yet as of this writing. This should have been tested/recognized by some ORA staff before the book was released as ready for final publication.

Again, the content great, but I really like to build the code that is referenced to learn from it as I read chapters and I cannot as yet do so; here's hoping O'Reilly staff remedy this soon..

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

so this book is quite large, I have to say. I think it's one of the largest tech books that I've ever purchased. You get the feel that you are getting your value for your money. I live in Greece and had a bit of difficulty getting this book sent here by a friend of mine who lives in the states. The wait was worth it though.

The chapters are nicely ordered and I think there is a natural order to them, I cannot be sure whether the author really wanted this to happen or not. I know that with coobkooks we are supposed to pick the book up and read any part of the book that we want without having to read the book from chapter 1 to the end. having said that, I am finding myself reading the book from beginning and then just progressing towards the end. This makes me feel good that the author has put some thought behind the order of the recipes and how they can/should be read.

If you are like me, an intermediate dev, then I suggest that you not only read this book but also read Apple's documentations. I've seen in a few cases the author actually intentionally skips a few things and asks you to read apple's documentations if you really need a lot more information. However, just reading this book is also sufficient most of the times.

I don't know what else to say for now. if you need more information, you can just contact me and I'll be more than happy to let you know more about my experience with this book so far.

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

The content in this book is clear and well written as expected in an o'reilly title. The two star rating is for what was not in the book. In particular I wanted some examples of NSURLSession, new in iOS 7. The beginning of the networking chapter mentions the new class and states that we will learn more later in the chapter but it is never mentioned again, at least as far as I could see. If I am wrong and it is there, please point me to the right section!
Based on this, since it was the first topic I referred to the book for, I would not recommend it to someone as an update over the iOS 6 version.

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

having read apple's online guides and manuals I really think Vandad has to start working for a company such as apple if he isn't already. the style is so clear that I had no trouble going through the pages one by one. at times it felt really like I was reading a great sci-fi book where I could not put the book down for hours.

the examples are simple and easy to understand. I wish somebody could tell me where to download the sample codes from? probably somewhere on a git repository like the old editions of this book? o'reilly if you can help please that would be great.

the chapter on maps is pretty cool in this edition. I did have difficulty getting one of the examples running simply because I am not that pro in iOS programming but I'm doing my best to keep up.

it's concise and clear style of writing really adds value to be honest. i also enjoyed the chapter on passbook. i don't get why more programmers aren't using passbook to be honest. i have a few ideas for passbook integration which i am looking forward to implementing with the help of this book

all in all, i recommend this book if you want a great and handy reference on iOS programming

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

I have to clarify something before I start the review process. I am a web programmer and I've only recently started programming for iOS. So my knowledge in iOS is very limited and the only version of iOS that I've ever programmed for (using this book's help obviously) is iOS 7.0 so some of you indie developers out there will definitely have more knowledge on this subject than I do.

The book is concise and to the point. I didn't have any issues following the author's style of writing and explaining subjects. I think the chapter on ui-dynamics is very helpful and collection views are also awesome; I can see collection views were not in the previous edition so I didn't buy iOS 6 cookbook and went for iOS 7 instead and I'm happy about this choice.

I'd suggest that the author writes more about storyboards in the next edition and apart from this, I have no other suggestions. Thank you for this reference.

At times, if you are a beginner like me, you may find yourself reaching for some more help online but I can assume that there was no more room in this book to write about the basics as this book is almost 900 pages!!! I am reading the early release PDF and find it easy to copy paste code directly from the book into XCODE.

Comments about oreilly iOS 7 Programming Cookbook:

I bought this eBook online a few days ago when O'Reilly had a special promotion for iOS 7 books. I have upgraded my phone to iOS 7 and downloaded the latest SDK.

iOS 7 really changed everything for me and I've had to update my apps to use the latest iOS 7 look and feel. This book could have been released a bit earlier to save me countless hours of pain and manual researching but I am happy that it's released now.

Looking through it I found quite a lot of amazing tips and tricks. I am thinking now to integrate push notifications into my apps. The author uses PHP to write a simple push notification server and my backend is in .NET so I will need to do some work to write it in .NET but the chapter on notifications has already added to my knowledge.

There is a new chapter on UIKit dynamics. I have seen Apple using dynamics in the Messages.app on iOS 7 so I will be using this chapter to learn how to add these dynamics into my apps too.

This book has really matured since I last saw it. The last version that I bought was iOS 5 programming cookbook and not only has the content changed and been updated dramatically, but also the style of writing seems to have matured.

I would recommend this book for those who are looking for great tips on how to write amazing apps on iOS.
