Comments about oreilly Google Apps Script, 2nd Edition:

Frustration kept me from getting through all of the examples in a timely manner. I struggled with code examples that didn't work and other things that didn't work the way the book said they would.

Granted that Google Apps Script is probably a moving target and the version I'm working with is obviously a bit different from what the author was using. I also found that my ebook reader did not properly render some of the code snippets for some reason. I switched from the .mobi format to the .epub format and that helped.

I have given up on trying to follow the code examples; I found them hard to follow the way the author is progressively building them and changing them along the way. I can not recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have a thorough understanding of JavaScript and some experience with web development; this is not a book for beginners. I would recommend that you refer to the author's Drive site for this book as you work through the examples (http://goo.gl/zqy3VQ). You'll need to open them from the site in order to copy and paste them. If you try to download them, they will be in .json compressed format and you won't be able to open them in Apps Script.

Reviewer's Note: I am a member of the O'Reilly Blogger Review program and received a free copy of "Google Apps Script, 2nd Ed" which was used to write this review.

Comments about oreilly Google Apps Script, 2nd Edition:

I've been struggling my way through Google's documentation on this and their other APIs, their approach is to provide specs but never any application or it's limited to some edge case tutorial.

This book breaks down into a project based approach that was exactly what I needed to get the whole picture of what I was building.

It's not for the total beginner but I had already built some HTML pages using JQuery so I picked up on everything after the first few chapters.

Comments about oreilly Google Apps Script, 2nd Edition:

I needed to make the jump to HTML Service and this book got me there.
I noticed that copying/pasting code from the PDF inserted some odd page breaks and broke the code, typing the same code worked fine. The author has provided complete working examples accessible through Google Drive that can be viewed and run so it was no problem working from the live code.

Comments about oreilly Google Apps Script, 2nd Edition:

It was hard to follow on this book.

At first, it was not well organise for beginner to
            its chapter.

The focusing is so mess. It can be a big jump of code sample on Google Sheets/Google Docs then go to Google Site in one chapter.

After go in to the Chapter 5, reader will completely lost on after creating the Product Table. Most because of the use of Add On Engine and lack of sample file library on the books.

It may be possible the change of google where discontinue GUI Builder (first edition book) where to slot in the changes.

I don't think the code in this edition was checked before they sent it to print. Chapter 7 is a mess.
