Windows 10: The Missing Manual
The book that should have been in the box
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: September 2015
Pages: 690

With Windows 8, Microsoft completely reimagined the graphical user interface for its operating system, which now runs on both desktop PCs and tablets, but the overhaul was not without hitches and its dueling UIs (one designed for touch, the other for keyboards and mice) created significant confusion for users. Windows 10 (a free update to users of Windows 8 or Windows 7) fixes a number of the problems introduced by the revolution in Windows 8 and offers plenty of new features along, such as the new Spartan web browser, Cortana voice-activated “personal assistant,” new universal apps (that run on tablet, phone, and computer), and more. But to really get the most out of the new operating system, you’re going to need a guide.

Thankfully, Windows 10: The Missing Manual will be there to help. Like its predecessors, this book from the founder of Yahoo Tech, previous New York Times columnist, bestselling author, and Missing Manuals creator David Pogue illuminates its subject with technical insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners, veteran standalone PC users, new tablet owners, and those who know their way around a network.

Comments about oreilly Windows 10: The Missing Manual:

I like to take the time to figure out how to use my electronic devices to my advantage. Windows 10 has a lot of useful features but it is a constant work in progress, so I really wanted to have a manual they kept up with the changes. This is revised by the author as Microsoft makes changes to meet the needs of its users. The author also does a good job of labeling the chapters and indicating where to look for more information when referencing other material within a chapter. He also has a great sense of humor, which keeps me reading when I might want to nod off.

Comments about oreilly Windows 10: The Missing Manual:

Maintains the standard of this series. Adequately covers the changes in Windows 10 from Windows 7 & 8. Does have a number of minor errors that are likely to be corrected in later versions.

Comments about oreilly Windows 10: The Missing Manual:

I previously bought Pogue's Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual after the purchase of our family's home desktop in 2014. When Microsoft started nagging me about upgrading to Windows 10 in the summer of 2015, I wanted to get his Windows 10 Missing Manual before doing so, but it was not available until September. So, early adopter that I am, I purchased another book for my Kindle app before the installation on the desktop. While I have no regrets about upgrading to Windows 10 before I bought the Missing Manual, I only received a basic overview about the OS from the ebook. Good things come to those who wait- I placed Windows 10: The Missing Manual on my Christmas wish list, and received it that morning. There is no comparison to the level of detail in Pogue's book when you read the ebook. Pogue's easy to read prose style - and great sense of humor- combines with a level of detail about missing "tips and trick" to make this the perfect resource for my level of use and expertise. I would recommend it to any non-techie who wants to "get under the hood" about features of the OS that no one knew about- but should.

Comments about oreilly Windows 10: The Missing Manual:

I have used this book trying to set up Mail, Calendar, Groove Music, Phone Companion, People, & Cortana. Nothing works the way it is supposed to. I have purchased a $150 Assure support plan from Microsoft and spent hours watching level 2 support technicians trying to get these apps to work. Windows 10 are not ready for anyone but beta testers. The supporting documentation that the book promises will be available on this site, is mostly not ready as well. No wonder the Windows 10 upgrade is free, the book should be as well...
