Comments about oreilly FileMaker Pro 13: The Missing Manual:

This is an informative book full of useful and well-organized information, but it's style is inimitable to good technical writing.

It suffers from excessive cuteness, often coming off as treacly, twee, and patronizing. Its cloying "we're all good friends here, har har" tone is not only a stylistic flaw, but results in a needlessly wordy, diffuse text that gets in the way of its purpose: to inform.

It's by no means unusable, though I got through it rolling my eyes, wondering if the authors intended to write for children, and wasting energy suppressing the urge to pick up a red pen. I shudder to think of how a young would react to such "Aren't we having fun?!" condescension. In my experience no one – especially children – either likes or benefits from being treated like a child.

Diffuse language and obsequiousness really are serious flaws in a text: they make it difficult to glean the content. Difficult or esoteric concepts, in particular, are ill served by this approach. It's a shame to see so much solid, useful information is coated in sticky sugar.
