Expert Data Wrangling with R
Streamline Your Work with tidyr, dplyr, and ggvis
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: February 2015
Run time: 3 hours 50 minutes

Analysts often spend 50-80% of their time preparing and transforming data sets before they begin more formal analysis work. This video tutorial shows you how to streamline your code—and your thinking—by introducing a set of principles and R packages that make this work much faster and easier. Garrett Grolemund, Data Scientist and Master Instructor at RStudio, demonstrates how R and its packages help you tackle three main issues:

  • Data Manipulation. Data sets contain more information than they display. By transforming your data, you can reveal a wealth of descriptive statistics, group level observations, and hidden variables. R’s dplyr package provides optimized functions to help you transform data, as well as a pipe syntax that makes R code more concise and intuitive.
  • Data Tidying. Data sets come in many formats, but R prefers just one. R runs quickly and intuitively when your data is stored in the tidy format, a layout that allows vectorized programming. R’s tidyr package reshapes the layout of your data sets, making them tidy while preserving the relationships they contain.
  • Data Visualization. The structure of data visualizations parallels the structure of data sets. Once your data is tidy, visualizations become straightforward: each observation in your dataset becomes a mark on a graph, each variable becomes a visual property of the marks. The result is a grammar of graphics that lets you create thousands of graphs. R’s ggvis package implements the grammar, providing a system of data visualization for R.

Garrett Grolemund is a Data Scientist and Master Instructor at RStudio. Garrett maintains the lubridate R package and is the author of Hands-On Programming with R and the upcoming Data Science with R (both O’Reilly books).

Comments about oreilly Expert Data Wrangling with R:

Absolutely recommended. The examples are clear and for a principiant as me, I appreciate the progress from simple to complex. The narration and voice from the instructor is clear. I bought this video after trying to understand many manuals and books without success, but this video course really helps me to acquire the basic tools for data wrangling. I recommended this video to anyone interested in begin the learning of R for data analysis.

Comments about oreilly Expert Data Wrangling with R:

I was able to get this at half-price (approx. $40) on video. Like the video medium for learning, but even at $40, seemed like quite a lot to spend for such specific packages (tidyr, dplyr and ggvis). Learned a lot, so worth it for me. If videos are your preferred medium for learning, suggest checking this out (when it goes on sale again).

Comments about oreilly Expert Data Wrangling with R:

This series is yet another solid product from O'Reilly and Grolemund. When I reviewed "Introduction to Data Science with R" I only gave it four stars, as I felt it prudent to remain unbiased, and to provide room for improvement. That was not the case with this series!

Garrett Grolemund again knocks it out of the park, and I felt compelled to issue 5 stars. The other reviewers mention they wish that more material had been covered, but this could EASILY be done in a third installment: hopefully O'Reilly catches on to this and produces more. It should also be noted that the target audience is an intermediate crowd, not a group of experts, and therefore room for improvement is bound to occur--unless of course the video series was unrealistically long.
In sum, just buy this video series. You can thank me later!

Comments about oreilly Expert Data Wrangling with R:

This explains, with care, how to do many of the basic operations that you somehow missed as you were building your first dozen applications or so.

This could be useful for newbies, but it is absolutely heaven-sent for those who are trying to move beyond the basics but still have some gaps to fill in their foundation knowledge.

I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because of the scope. I found the quality of the presentation was very good, but I wish that more material had been covered.

Comments about oreilly Expert Data Wrangling with R:

This is an excellent resource if you want to understand how to use the dplyr, tidyr and ggvis libraries in combination to do some data wrangling and some elementary visualizing of exploratory results.

I really like the instructors' structuring of the content and explanations of the material. I also like the usage of "Test Your Knowledge" sections. A plus is the conclusion/capstone at the end.

Having said that, I had hoped that all the effort in building the base knowledge would have led to more in-depth case studies of how to apply these libraries in performing exploratory data analysis, instead of just seeing it used in piecemeal fashion.

The coverage of ggvis also seems quite superficial.
