Playing Minecraft is a lot of fun, but the game is more engaging, entertaining, and educational when kids learn how to build mods—small programs that let them modify game elements and add content. This family-friendly guide teaches kids and parents how to create mods of different types, using the Minecraft Forge modding tool. No programming experience is needed.

You’ll not only build some amazing mods with the book’s easy-to-follow instructions, but you’ll also learn how to work with Java, the same programming language that Minecraft uses. Why wait? Get started with computer programming and be more creative with Minecraft while you’re at it!

This book will help you:

  • Learn the fundamentals of Minecraft Forge and other tools, such as Eclipse
  • Start out by building and testing a simple chat message mod
  • Build cool mods that make things explode on contact, and help entities jump higher and climb walls
  • Introduce new Minecraft content, including commands, blocks, items, and recipes and textures
  • Work with Java fundamentals such as classes, methods, annotations, control structures, and arrays
  • Learn techniques for creating your own mods

This guide is based on workshops the authors deliver to kids around the world.

Comments about oreilly Minecraft Modding with Forge:

I would rate this a solid 4 stars since it gave my 12-year old son a place to start and feel successful. I hadn't programmed in Java since the late 1990s, and I don't play Minecraft, so there was a limit to what I would have been able to do without spending a lot of time on Google. With this book, he was able to get going and create some simple mods using the tried and true "copy/paste" coding techniques. You know the ones we did as kids when the source was published in magazines and we had to "paste" by entering every line by hand? It is much easier now, but it is much the same idea.

The code in the book works, and, with a little creativity, you can extend the ideas presented. My son decided that he wanted to work with a PREVIOUS version of Forge, so we got to talk about API compatibility and I still had to spend some time figuring out the differences between what was in the book and what was possible in the version he chose to use. THAT was completely self-inflicted pain and no fault of the book.

For me, there is not enough background information about WHY you are doing certain things within the development environment. I realize this is not a book on Eclipse, but my son blew up his workspace and we had to spend some time piecing things back together. People these days seem to like to look at the pictures and match their stuff to the pictures. I still read the words. If you are the first kind, and you can follow directions exactly, you'll enjoy this book. If you're like me, the words actually help get things working when someone doesn't follow the pictures.

Comments about oreilly Minecraft Modding with Forge:

I bought this book from my bookstore hoping that it would teach me something about modding Minecraft. I have read other books like HeadFirst Java before this, so I didn't really need the explanation of for loops. However the explanation that was given about that stuff, wouldn't have been helpfull if I hadn't read other books.

Most things are explained within one to three sentences and it is focused on copying everything in it, rather than really making you learn stuff.

Comments about oreilly Minecraft Modding with Forge:

This book has not only expanded my son's knowledge of Minecraft modifications, but has opened his mind to the wonderful world of programming. His mind is racing with all sorts of ideas for new mods and is considering creating videos to help other would-be Minecraft modders. Thanks to Arun and Aditya for your work and tremendous contribution to the growth of our young software engineers.

Comments about oreilly Minecraft Modding with Forge:

This is just the book I needed, when I needed it. I teach programming to kids and many of them play Minecraft, and would like to modify it. Now I'm well prepared to teach them!

Arun and Aditya have many hours of experience teaching Minecraft modding to kids at places like Hack the Future, Silicon Valley Code Camp, and Devoxx4Kids. Arun knows Java (the language and environment) very well, having played an important role with it at Sun Microsystems and later Oracle.

The book presents lots of fun mods, and clearly explains the code, line by line, in a manner suitable for a near-beginner or an experienced programmer. I enthusiastically recommend this book for kids and adults who want to mod Minecraft with Forge using Java, or other Java Virtual Machine languages such as Scala.
