Learning Swift
Building Apps for OS X and iOS
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: May 2016
Pages: 536

Get hands-on experience with Apple’s Swift programming language by building real working apps. With this practical guide, skilled programmers with little or no knowledge of Apple development will learn how to code with Swift 2 by developing three complete, tightly linked versions of the Notes application for the OS X, iOS, and watchOS platforms.

In the process, you’ll learn Swift’s fundamentals, including its syntax and features, along with the basics of the Cocoa, CocoaTouch, and WatchKit frameworks. This book teaches you how to use common design patterns for Swift, how to structure an application for Apple’s platforms, and how to submit working apps to the App Store.

Divided into four distinct parts, this book includes:

  • Swift 2 basics: Learn Swift’s features for object-oriented development, as well as various developer tools
  • OS X app development: Set up your app, work with its documents, and build out its features
  • iOS app development: Use multimedia, contacts, location, notifications, and iCloud files to build a fully featured iOS Notes app
  • Advanced app extensions: Support Apple Watch and learn how to debug, monitor, and test all three of your Swift apps

          Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

I'm relatively new to the Swift world but not new to languages like C, C++, C#, PHP, and Python. This book has worked well for me so far. Just went through chapters 1 and 2 so I have a better understanding of Swift syntax and how it differs from languages I'm more familiar with. So far so good.

            Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

This book is in prerelease but it seems mostly completed.

After being very disappointed with many Swift and iPhone programming books that I purchased I tried this one as a last resort. I should have tried this one first. Good topic coverage.

This book not structured like a traditional programming book but it works in its favor. Instead it walks you through a very pragmatic iPhone and MAC app. It mostly explains what it's doing along the way.

            Good work.

              Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

Very good book with unique approach. Sometimes does not fully explain code but it covers so many concepts that this is forgivable. Get this one if you're choosing between the new Swift 2 books. Good code.

                Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

I have very much enjoyed getting the updates to this book in 'rough cut' form from O'Reilly and Associates.

This book takes a totally different approach to the other new programming for SWIFT books that have come out this year and I think that it works. It teaches you how to build an APP with SWIFT and along the way teaches you SWIFT. This is different from others who attempt to teach SWIFT in abstract form.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in iPhone or Mac or Apple Watch development with SWIFT. Very well written and prompt rough cut updates.

                  Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

This book takes you through building one app end to end for every major platform Apple has to offer.

I found it an interesting approach to teaching Swift 2 programming that I have not seen before in book form. It's probably beneficial as it shows me what's actually going on when you use Swift to make something instead of a collection of isolated sample codes.

I have followed the authors and enjoy their style. As usual with these authors it is easy to follow and does not have any weird tangents. Recommended.

                  Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

I have been reading this book alongside other resources that i have found on reddit, Apple's dev website and stackoverflow.

the information in this book is quite well organized. The amount of information could be more as I am a bit disappointed by lack of information on some subjects such as advanced swift generics.

overall, i am a bit split between whether i'd recommend this book or not to anybody but i think it's worth checking out anyways.

                    Comments about oreilly Learning Swift:

This book teaches you Swift by building one app for a lot of Apple platforms (Macintosh, iPhone and iPad and Watch). This is a good approach, but it is perhaps trying to do a bit much at once. Everything I have read so far is good though and I am learning. The code is modern unlike other new iOS books from O'Reilly. Nice clean code on Github.
