I only read these bad review after I spent several hours looking for the correct on line link to the companion exercise data. This address it totaly wrong: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780735639027 I will also confirm other reviews and also say shame to both Microsoft or Oreilly to have lent their name and support for this book. This is worthless and waste of time book.

Comments about Microsoft Press Microsoft® Expression® Web 4 Step by Step:
Code samples These are not where the book says they are. The instructions in the book says that there is a zip file under the book cover image - there is not. Also once the Companion Content has been located (on the other side of the page) there is no examples.zip file, just the Companion Content.zip file which is 289Mb. This would take over an hour to download at the speed I have.

I Love This Book!
By Alan B.
from Inman, SC
Comments about Microsoft Press Microsoft® Expression® Web 4 Step by Step:
I work a full time job, but I wanted to do my own website. I'm an old front page guy. Recently I bought 2 books on version 4 and yours is the clear winner. It gets to the point and tells me just what I want to know. Thank you very much! At first I was skipping around, but when I started from the beginning, everything began to click for me. Keep up the good work!

Comments about Microsoft Press Microsoft® Expression® Web 4 Step by Step:
I have just spent two hours trying to download the sample files (which I wouldn't have found at all if not for the address included in another review). And that was AFTER struggling to understand the book while looking at my own web pages ... I finally thought, maybe it will make more sense if I look at the Sample Site. I'm not a beginner ... I used Front Page for years. I've taught myself to use countless software programs just by reading the directions. I bought this book because I had questions that weren't answered in the Help documentation or online at Microsoft Support. Well, I STILL have those questions. Thanks for nothing.

Once you finnaly find a link to the errata page you will find that not one is a confirmed errata all are unconfirmed even though the same issues are found by the users. After all this time you would hope that the author would have viewed these unconfirmed errata and made an effort to confirm and give updates on the confirmed errata. to be honest this is a complete waste of money and if your a beginner forget it and find another book MICROSOFT should be ashamed to have their name on this book the cost is for the software is reasonable but the learing material costs is prohibitive at best and borders on being purposefully misleading to encourage you to but further updates of the material as they eventually get releases shame on you.............. How do i get my money back? amazon say the book is now in used condition as i tried to slog my way through this poorley thought out learning material.....

Page 264 # 19

Comments about Microsoft Press Microsoft® Expression® Web 4 Step by Step:
I followed the instructions starting on page 264, # 19. After creating the vertical line and then following step 20 the vertical line disappears. Can't get it to stay. Very frustrating. Without this line the preview on page 283 doesn't work. Also I cannot find the View/Submit Errata as described in the introduction XIX

Chapter 3 Using the Include Page Feature
By Jim

Pros
Easy to understand
Cons

Comments about Microsoft Press Microsoft® Expression® Web 4 Step by Step:
I was happy with the book until I got to "Using the Include Page Feature". I followed the instructions and when I pasted the WC3 into the new HTML page, code displays in the Design View instead of the images as well as in the Code View. I tried to go back but can't since I already cut the WC3 from page 3 in the Dynamic Web Template. The only solution I can think of is to unzip the download again and restore page 3 to start over to see if I made a mistake somewhere.

Too many errors, unclear instructions
By 30 Years of Experience
from Oregon
Comments about Microsoft Press Microsoft® Expression® Web 4 Step by Step:
I bought this book for someone who was to be my helper. They gave up in chapter 2, and worse, this book scared them away from ever thinking they could produce a simple web page. Then I began trying to read it. I worked through page after page of wrong and unclear instructions. Chapter 4 was a show stopper for me to become comfortable with Expression Web's handling of CSS. I already knew how to manually edit Style Sheets, but EW4 promises a host of support options for quickly reaching and editing styles. The first introduction comes on page 177. It then directs you to edit "auto-style1", which is non-existant. Now it's August and the Publisher still hasn't published an errata or offered work-arounds. This book starts by having you install optional browsers and php engines, and a bunch of incorrectly presented technical garbage that no user needs to know at the beginning. I appreciated a walk through of application and editor settings, but his examples leave the program in a state that doesn't match the instruction. He might introduce a seemingly insignificant term or feature on page 24, but not use it until page 171, and expect that you'll remember it without prompting. I hate his book.
Merchant response: Hi Cyndi,
Thank you for reviewing this book. I'm sorry to hear that working through the book and using the example files has been a frustrating experience, but we appreciate your feedback.
