Comments about oreilly SCJP: Sun Certified Programmer for Java Platform Study Guide:

I've been very frustrated with this book. McGraw-Hill's "Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Guide" by Sierra and Bates is the gold standard and is far superior.

I walked away from the Raposa book in favor of Sierra/Bates, but came back later to use it as a reference.

What a terrible idea that was.

First, it includes too much peripheral information about Java. While valuable, it's not on the SCJP/OCPJP 6 exam. Almost as if the author is more concerned with showing off his Java skills than focusing on exam prep.

That's minor, but the last straw came during the section on Java generics. This topic is confusing enough already, and the sample only needlessly complicates it. To make matters worse, the book goes out of its way to take pride in its ridiculous example with more faulty information.

    From page 461:
    "Understanding Generic Supertypes

You might find it confusing that a FileNotFoundException object can appear in
the exceptions list, especially because FileNotFoundException is not a parent of IOException. ... In fact, any child object of Exception can appear in the exceptions object created on line 30 of the previous code snippet."

That last line is simply not true: NullPointerException or ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException both extend Exception but cannot be added to the list as the author mentions.

For a proper summary of lower-bound wildcards, see the first book I mentioned or search for Oracle's Java Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Generics (Updated).
