MCSE in a Nutshell: The Windows 2000 Exams Review

By Chris Henne

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

The previous version was essential reading for my NT4 MCSE exams and it was my primary revision tool.

I was sweating on the release of the 2000 version but was disappointed once I finally got my copy. The Windows 2000 book looked to be a minor content update from the NT4 edition with a great deal of factual errors and inaccuracies. Some essential exam content was brushed over and the practice exams were not even similar to current exam format.

In fact, this lack of detail and number of errors made the book worse than useless as an exam revision tool. I ended up needing to use free cram style study guides to correct the facts and fill in the gaps.

After the high standards set by the NT4 version, the Windows 2000 edition was a major disappointment.

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

My rating is based on the February 2001, first edition. This is a very good book to start with, but ultimately experience is the best teacher. There are quite a few inaccuracies and a lot of information is taken directly from the previous version designed for Windows NT 4.0. Most likely anyone considering this book for studying would be better served waiting for a 2nd edition.

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

Very good book to study towards the Windows 2000 MSCE certification after being certified for NT4. This book will explains the important changes in W2K compared to NT4 and also the subjects that really matter on the exams.

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

I am very disappointed with this book, all the more so since I appreciated the previous ones in the series while preparing for my NT MCSE. Information is lacking in this one, or is covered very superficially, while unnecessary details look as if they were copied from the older edition. It is a pity, since you can find more comprehensive resources online. Even as a reference guide for your practical studies, this book will not make it.

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

I was highly disappointed with this book. I am a regular buyer, and great fan, of the O'Reilly editions (must have about 30 of your publications); some of my best, to-the-points, no-frills books being from you. I generally warmly recommend O'Reilly books to colleagues looking for "the real info".

But ... this MCSE book is totally insufficient, even as a "cramsession". Looks like you needed to quickly publish someting in this subject. Fortunately, this is an exception.

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

This book by far is totally insufficient and not useful towards preparation for Windows 2000 MCSE track. The information is BOXED for the real world problems. However, the content does not provide enough material to prepare any candidate for Windows 2000 MCSE. I suggest, the other book by Oreilly, by Mitch Tullock.

The material in this book in ONLY a short reference and nothing more. The information is repeated however of no real value to the user. That is why in only deserves two stars.

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

This book is good for cramming. I tried using those Exam Cram books to prepare for the 2000 Pro and Server Exams and they suck! I'd say they're not worth the paper they're printed on!! The authors of the O'reilly books seem to have a knack for teaching in easily absorbable language, and the book's approach to teaching I believe is very effective. Moreover, the book is compact and unintimidating. I find it comforting to study this book.

My one gripe however, is that the chapters could have included more facts n' figures regaring DNS roots, etc and perhaps a section towards the end on some troubleshooting tips.

All in all, a wonderful book and EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY!!

All you get in an $8000 course for US$30

Keep up the good work!!

Comments about O'Reilly Media MCSE: Windows 2000 Exams in a Nutshell:

Sorry! But, this book could have been better. Yet, it seems that the authors did not spend much time on doing a better job at this. Instead, they followed the NT 4.0 template the other book that have on NT 4.0 MCSE Core exams and just filled in the pages. The information is repeated in every Exam similar to Microsoft Press MCSE books. For example, you won't learn much about IP Security, until you read the section in the designing security in the book. The information, in my opinion, could have been presented much better by the authors. After all, the authors have had access to Win 2K HELP files and Resource Kits.

Come on guys, you know, you could have done better! Take a look the book Windows 2000 administration also by Oreilly! At least Mitch Tulloch spent some time reading the material and wrote his stuff in his own words!!! He worked, I am sure!

I am dissapointed at both the authors and Oreilly for putting out such a low caliber book -:) Is it so hard to write a good book these days???

I found this book quite a nifty rewference tool for preparing for the MCSE 2000 exams. I used O'Reilly products in preperation for the MCSE in NT 4.0 exams, as well. High quility all around. I highly recomend them.
