Collars have been worn by dogs to identify both the pets and their owners since humans domesticated the animals.

The collar pictured on the cover of this book belonged to Morgaine, a black labrador mix who was adopted in 1991 from Angell Memorial Animal Shelter in Boston at the age of 2. When the Taylor-Lovis family first saw her, Morgaine was laying quietly with a stuffed animal in the back of her cage. After they took her outside, however, she came alive with energy. In the many happy years following her adoption, she would always run as if there were no tomorrow when let her off her leash. Indoors, she continued to be a quiet, extremely well-mannered lady. She lived for her meals and a little loving, and died at age 14 of natural causes. She's remembered by her family as "more than a dog...the best friend we could ever ask for."
