Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Released: June 2004
Pages: 496

The vast majority of Oracle SQL books discuss some syntax, provide the barest rudiments of using Oracle SQL, and perhaps include a few simple examples. It might be enough to pass a survey course, or give you some buzz words to drop in conversation with real Oracle DBAs. But if you use Oracle SQL on a regular basis, you want much more. You want to access the full power of SQL to write queries in an Oracle environment. You want a solid understanding of what's possible with Oracle SQL, creative techniques for writing effective and accurate queries, and the practical, hands-on information that leads to true mastery of the language. Simply put, you want useful, expert best practices that can be put to work immediately, not just non-vendor specific overview or theory.

Updated to cover the latest version of Oracle, Oracle 10g, this edition of the highly regarded Mastering Oracle SQL has a stronger focus on technique and on Oracle's implementation of SQL than any other book on the market. It covers Oracle s vast library of built-in functions, the full range of Oracle SQL query-writing features, regular expression support, new aggregate and analytic functions, subqueries in the SELECT and WITH clauses, multiset union operators, enhanced support for hierarchical queries: leaf and loop detection, and the CONNECT_BY_ROOT operator, new partitioning methods (some introduced in Oracle9i Release 2), and the native XML datatype, XMLType.

Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition fills the gap between the sometimes spotty vendor documentation, and other books on SQL that just don't explore the full depth of what is possible with Oracle-specific SQL. For those who want to harness the untapped (and often overlooked) power of Oracle SQL, this essential guide for putting Oracle SQL to work will prove invaluable.

Comments about O'Reilly Media Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition:

This is a good book. Like many O'Reilly books, it's probably going to be a challenge to get through if you're an absolute newbie to SQL and Oracle. But if you're a newbie you're not expected to be doing the more advanced stuff anyway (unless you've lied on your CV...).
It probably suits the intermediate level SQL developer better. The chapter on advanced group operations is very good.
Those who complain about the examples..really, if you can't be bothered to look on the net for supplementary explanations of the concept that you're struggling with, you shouldn't even be in IT.
It's just one book of many that you need to help you become a decent all-rounder, because you need to know more on PL/SQL and performance tuning amongst other things, and really, there are always many, many more things to know, but it's a good book nonetheless.
One thing I would say is, it was published a while ago now and could do with an update. I hope they have one in the pipeline.

Comments about O'Reilly Media Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition:

The book contains incomplete/incorrect SQL syntax examples. In addition, the supplemental schema object creation script "mosql2_data.sql" is missing inserts for items in the 'line_item' table that the book will reference. Great disappointment.

Comments about O'Reilly Media Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition:

Can I say what a great book this is. I am an oracle developer of 7 years experience who has spent the last three concentrating on object orientated Java development. As of two months ago I found myself back in the world of Oracle SQL for reporting and it dawned upon me how rusty I was with Oracle SQL. There have been great advances across 10 and 11g and unless you regularly work with advanced reporting functions it can be difficult to appreciate that it is possible to output varied data in one SQL statement rather than resorting to a logical breakup in PL/SQL. This book covers all depths, from what may appear to be too basic to extremely specialised and complex operations and is always well thought out and clearly explained.

Unlike other reviewers on this site I have had no problems with the examples. I am currently up to chapter 9 and the download issue must have been corrected.

Comments about O'Reilly Media Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition:

I'm at the end of chapter 5 at the moment and this is the first book on SQL that I really like! The examples in the book are great, I like the author's writing style as well.
The only problem is sample DB which I downloaded from this site. First examples did work (from previous chapters) but right now most of the time I get "no data found".
I run the queries at Oracle Database Express Edition. Is it possible to get better script to generate the example DB please?

Comments about O'Reilly Media Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition:

I was using this book to finish my OCA.
After page 13 I stopped using this book because a lot of examples written down are not working with the downloaded examples.
Most of them are giving errors and I got tired to figure out what was wrong there.

Comments about O'Reilly Media Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition:

I bought this book to give me hands on study material to Oracle SQL. This in fact has been the biggest disappointment in all the books I have bought. What was the author thinking? The book's queries are all addressing parts distributor database. But where the hell is this database apart from some obscure computer of the author?

Unless you want to read a fiction novel, please refrain from getting this book. Personally, I don't understand why the authors would not provide an online database acoompanying this book. Utterly pathetic and horrific excuse of a book. Shame on OReilly to support it.
