Not to be confused with the American bison, the water buffalo is native to Africa and Asia and is also found in parts of Europe as well as Pakistan and Afganistan. It spends its time in grassy swamplands, where it can spend copious amounts of time wallowing in mud and water while finding much vegetation to eat. The water buffalo likes to spend most of its time submerged almost completely in the water. This offers the water buffalo a natural protection against insects and parasites that can plague it. It is mainly nocturnal, especially in areas heavily populated with humans. The water buffalo is a massive animal, standing over 6 feet and weighing over 2,000 pounds. Both males and females have long horns that begin at the top of the head and reach back. These horns can be curvy or straight and can reach lengths of six feet. Its hair is dark gray, coarse, and short. Its diet consists of grass, tree bark, sticks, and other vegetation. The cover image is from Riverside Natural History. The cover font is Adobe ITC Garamond. The text font is Linotype Birka; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is LucasFont's TheSans Mono Condensed. |
