Comments about oreilly The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion:

I am not one that enjoys reading and it is difficult for me to fully comprehend something the first time I read it. That being said I enjoyed this book, it was easy to read, had lots of examples and frequently referred back to previous chapter to help build and retain knowledge.

The book starts very basic and works its way slowly so you can really get comfortable with your camera. The book has tons of examples, not only for the options and settings on your camera but also the different (correct) ways to shoot a photo (i.e.: exposure, lighting, and depth of field). The book is not just a manual for your camera but provides excellent insight into photography; my favorite was the section on learning to see again, it had a great metaphor.

There were a few topics that needed improvement. The section on depth of field fell short; it felt me wanting much more. Also after the section on adjusting predefined picture styles I am still left wondering when? How? and Why? The section on bracketing was not well written even though you get the concept. I also wish that there would be a chapter on the accessories for the camera.

Overall I would suggest this book to someone. It is not a camera manual but it goes way beyond that.
