Colophon The animal on the cover of Windows 7: The Definitive Guide is an eland (Taurotragusoryx), a name derived from the Dutch word for moose. Native to the savannahs and arid plains of eastern and southern Africa, elands are the largest African bovids and the largest antelopes in the world. They stand about five feet high at the shoulder, and fullgrownmales (bulls) may weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. Both sexes are characterized by heavy, spiraling horns that extend up to three feet. Their coats are tan or reddish with accents of white; bulls have a tuft of black fur growing from their dewlap (the loose skin hanging from the neck) and a mat of fur on their foreheads that thickens with age. The eland's diet consists mainly of foliage, though it also eats fruits, seeds, seedpods, and tuberous roots. It uses its long horns to move twigs and branches into reach. Elandsfeed for long periods of time to maintain their massive build. Both diurnal and nocturnal, they feed and sleep during the day and feed most of the night during cooler months, but sleep during the day and feed all night when the weather is hot. Though it has not adapted to desert conditions, the eland employs the same type of water conservation that desert-dwelling animals use. Its body temperature can rise as much as 13 degrees without the eland having to expend any energy to cool itself off. Though the size and power of the male eland may discourage animal predators, female elands can be vulnerable to attacks from lions and spotted hyenas. Humans are a more pronounced threat, however, as the slowness and relative docility of the eland makes it easy to hunt, and it is valued for its rich milk, meat, and useful hide. Elands are the animals most often depicted in early East African rock art. They also figure prominently into the mythology of tribes such as the Bushmen of southern Africa. In one famous myth, the wife of Cagn, the Bushmen's shape-shifting supreme god, gives birth to the first eland. Cagn's sons kill the young animal while hunting, angering their father. Cagn sprinkles the dead animal's blood and fat on the ground, and a multitude of elands emerge, which Cagn allows his people to hunt and eat. The Bushmen attribute the wildness of the eland to the fact that the first one was killed before it was ready to be hunted, and thus was spoiled. The cover image is from Wood's Animate Creation. The cover font is Adobe ITC Garamond. The text font is Linotype Birka; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is LucasFont's TheSansMonoCondensed. |
