Since 1996, JavaScript: The Definitive Guide has been the bible for JavaScript programmers—a programmer's guide and comprehensive reference to the core language and to the client-side JavaScript APIs defined by web browsers.

The 6th edition covers HTML5 and ECMAScript 5. Many chapters have been completely rewritten to bring them in line with today's best web development practices. New chapters in this edition document jQuery and server side JavaScript. It's recommended for experienced programmers who want to learn the programming language of the Web, and for current JavaScript programmers who want to master it.

"A must-have reference for expert JavaScript programmers...well-organized and detailed."
—Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript, CTO of Mozilla

"I made a career of what I learned from JavaScript: The Definitive Guide.”
—Andrew Hedges, Tapulous

Comments about oreilly JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition:

This is a must read for JavaScript developers. The book is structured in such a way that generic JavaScript information is read before the more front-end or back-end specific things. This makes it easier to skip certain parts which I was not interested in or felt like I had knowledge enough about. It also include a JavaScript API reference, so do not let the size of the book scare you.

Comments about oreilly JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition:

This book is a great resource of knowledge about Javascript, it covers a lot of things that are mandatory for every GOOD programmer.

For me, this book has been a great inversion.

I have learned things that I never understood in JavaScript. And a lot of samples help very much - need just not to be lazy trying them.

Comments about oreilly JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition:

I'm using the 5th edition, it has traps for the unwary novice, and/or those in a hurry. At page 77, the easy to see text in a page has above it "this is equivalent to, but more compact than, the following if statement"....
What is does not say is that "the following" is what you would do in a different language. It then sets out code that is perfectly good JavaScript (in that it does not throw an error) but equally it does not give the result anticipated. It does not work because part of the code assigns a value rather than simply testing equivalence. My fault for one, being too new to the language to use this book, and two, skipping from the index to the code segment. It's an hour of my life I won't get back, and I will read sections more carefully.

Really awesome coverage of a broad topic. My only complaint is that much has changed in the JavaScript world so it could use a refresh.

Comments about oreilly JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition:

I started doing serious software development in 1961, and I have mastered many languages. This book services two uses for me. It is full of code samples which are well designed and professional in detail. Secondly, it is an excellent reference manual for core Javascript and well as Client side Javascript programming. I use it everyday in my development work and highly recommend it for Javascript developers.

                        Exceedingly useful. Beats all online-manuals.
                        Standard-conscious without becoming fundamentalist.
                        No leanings towards specific vendors.
                        Clear explanations.
It is complete, practical und clearly written.
The novice can learn the language from the first 100 pages. The expert will find everything imaginable.
