Comments about oreilly jQuery: Novice to Ninja, 2nd Edition:

I bought this book to learn how to use jQuery with Microsoft's MVC platform. I am not a novice programmer but I am new to JavaScript and jQuery so I thought this would give me a head start.

I ended up being somewhat annoyed by the cutesy writing style and very low-level approach to the subject metter. It seems to be written for the novice programmer who wants to find out what this jQuery thing is all about. I tried several times to get what I could out of the book but in the end it was not useful to me at all and I haven't opened it since shortly after I got it.

This book may well be a valid approach for some people but I simply found it to be annoying (I don't like the approach taken in the HeadFirst series of how-to books either). If you are an accomplished programmer at all this book is probably not for you.

Comments about oreilly jQuery: Novice to Ninja, 2nd Edition:

I initially read through the whole book while sitting on trains to and from work. I did not need to refer to the code files at all, which shows both how clearly and well thought out the authors have made their examples and also how simple and consistent the jQuery API is.

I will now go through the book again with PC at hand and do everything I can imagine with the example code files. Not because I really need to, but it will be fun and help me to remember any of the less frequently used jQuery features.

I could not find fault with this book, it was a pleasure to read and was inspiring me to change the way I code at work before I was past the first few chapters. Can't say if it will help those who don't use JavaScript already, but if you do, read this book.

Fantastic book, filled with useful content on jQuery. My experience is mainly with server side development and I'm very much a beginner with jQuery. I've learnt a lot about jQuery and also a lot about how to think like a front-end developer. This book really lives up to its title.
