Comments about O'Reilly Media Oracle Performance Tuning:

I have studied many Oracle tuning books, also much newer, but this is still the best one on the market. It says how things really work, and when and why they do NOT work!No other book do that - and so appropriately.I am used to recommend an accurate study of it to all the colleagues I meet. When can we have an update of it?

Oracle Performance Tuning, 2nd Edition Review

    By Alan Wilson

Comments about O'Reilly Media Oracle Performance Tuning:

Reading this book has greatly increased my knowlege of how Oracle databases

work and how to tune them. I used the book to help me study for the OCP tuning exam. This book is a masterpiece but a new edition is needed to bring the book upto date for Oracle8i.

Oracle Performance Tuning, 2nd Edition Review

    By K Vainstein

    from Undisclosed

Comments about O'Reilly Media Oracle Performance Tuning:

The book is certainly excellent, but its being outdated is a very serious minus. Since 1996,

many INIT.ORA parameters have been dropped

recommended OFA (alluded to) has been changed quite a bit

hardware landscape has changed, a lot. Disk is dirt-cheap, local storage networks are the latest fad. There're some new RAID types and filesystems

Web browsers are the most common clients; correct interaction with web servers (eg, staggered connection acquisition) is important

using the cost-based optimizer is almost always the Right Thing, due to improvements

many new index features/choices (and we all know how important indexes are!)

new Oracle add-ons like interMedia and iFS can use some honest performance evaluations

    , and so forth...

In other words: a new edition is imperative!

PS: As to archiving being "not recommended", that's a pretty nuts piece of advice in this day of 24-7 HA being a routine requierment. Having your DB down with no backup is what I do not recommend.

Oracle Performance Tuning, 2nd Edition Review

Comments about O'Reilly Media Oracle Performance Tuning:

    Excellente book!

This book opened my eyes for the fact that performance tuning goes beyond SQL code and hardware: it is also about OS, SQL*Net, Backup&Recovery, standards and so on.

When will the next edition be available ???

Oracle Performance Tuning, 2nd Edition Review

Comments about O'Reilly Media Oracle Performance Tuning:

This book is in a league by itself, a must have for Oracle DBA's. I have read a lot of Oracle performance tuning manuals but none come close to matching this book. We need a 3RD edition with more tuning for Oracle 8 included.

Comments about O'Reilly Media Oracle Performance Tuning:

Pretty good book, but published in November 1996?

4 years old? I'm sure that even more depth can be gained with a new edition.
