For many users, working in the UNIX environment means using vi, a full-screen text editor available on most UNIX systems. Even those who know vi often make use of only a small number of its features. The vi Editor Pocket Reference is a companion volume to O'Reilly's updated sixth edition of Learning the vi Editor, a complete guide to text editing with vi. New topics in Learning the vi Editor include multi-screen editing and coverage of four vi clones: vim, elvis, nvi, and vile. This small book is a handy reference guide to the information in the larger volume, presenting movement and editing commands, the command-line options, and other elements of the vi editor in an easy-to-use tabular format.

Comments about oreilly vi Editor Pocket Reference:

This is a great guide, and I often rely on it more than its full edition counterpart. Its only flaw is it needs updating for vim 7.0.

    Brilliant little reference book

Comments about oreilly vi Editor Pocket Reference:

I'm normally an Emacs type of guy (my flavor is Xemacs), but some days I need the lightness of vi to perform quick tasks. O'Reilly's vi Editor Pocket Reference is a great book to have by my desk, with access to all of the vital functions in vi listed.

This little guide even covers a few vi clones, including Vim and vile. Just wish it covered Vigor for a few laughs. :)

    vi Editor Pocket Reference Review

    By Andreas Kaempf

    from Undisclosed

Comments about oreilly vi Editor Pocket Reference:

Absolutely superb summary of vi commands and operation, including many (but not all) additional commands in vim. Only 66 pages, but I still refer to it after months of using vi with increasing confidence. Get it and enjoy becoming an efficient master of this wonderful tool! By the way, the sed & awk Pocket Reference has also been very useful for regular expressions and text substitutions in vi.
