Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell
By J.D. "Illiad" Frazer
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Final Release Date: April 2000
Pages: 136

The follow-up to the highly successful first collection of User Friendly comic strips from O'Reilly & Associates, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell tells the continuing tale of Columbia Internet, "the friendliest, hardest-working and most neurotic little Internet Service Provider in the world." Take three techs, two salespeople, a designer, two executives, a couple of administrative staff, mix in a mischievous Artificial Intelligence and a "dust puppy" born from the innards of a mega server, put them all together in a crowded little office, and you have the makings of one of the most off-beat, original and funny comic strips to come along in years."If you ask 20 people what User Friendly is about, you'll get 20 subtly different answers," says the cartoon's creator, J.D. 'Illiad' Frazer. " Some say it's a cartoon about Open Source; some say it's about the rift between technical and nontechnical staff; others say its about the pain that technical people suffer when dealing with the stubbornly unintelligent; some even say that User Friendly is a cartoon about Internet Workers. User Friendly addresses all those issues, but I don't think that's what it's about, strictly speaking. User Friendly's universe revolves around the simple idea that technology brings out both the best and the worst in people, no matter who they are."User Friendly reads like Dilbert for the Open Source community. With a massive online following, it provides outsiders a light-hearted look at the world of the hard core geek, and allows those who make their living dwelling in this world a chance to laugh at themselves.

Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell Review

By George Woolley of Oakland.pm

from Undisclosed

Comments about oreilly Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell:

The User Friendly (UF) Comic Strip is about the saga

of a cast of characters who work at or are somehow involved

with Columbia Internet, a fictional Internet Service Provider.

This is the second of four (so far) book compilations

of the User Friendly comic strip.

What did you expect from the book?

Based on the title of the book,

I expected a humorous guide to world domination

in something like the format of an O'Reilly Nutshell book.

I also expected lots of User Friendly strips

and especially ones involving Cthulhu, Pitr and Crud Puppy,

who are all evil geniuses.

I expected to encounter some other evil geniuses as well,

for example, Bill Gates.

Did you get what you expected?

Well:

* The book is geeky funny.

* The book contains plenty of UF strips,

actually more than I expected.

* Pitr appears often.

However:

* The book doesn't focus on world domination.

* Cthulhu does not appear at all.

We don't see much of Crud Puppy either. Darn! :(

* The format is not that of a Nutshell book.

For example, there is no table of contents or index.

The book is very funny,

but it does not deliver fully on the title of the book.

I think it's time for a second edition

with more focussed content

and following, more closely, the format

of a typical O'Reilly Nutshell book.

Who's the book for?

The book is appropriate for geeks

and people interested in learning about geeks and geek culture.

Comments about oreilly Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell:

While I enjoy the cartoons, I was disapointed by the editing. The strips are not in chronological order, some are missing, and one has completely different dialog from the original (Feb. 17 1999.) Also it would be nice if the colour strips were printed in colour.
