Pages: 352

The LEGO® Technic system opens a new realm of building possibilities. Using motors, gears, pneumatics, pulleys, linkages, and more, you can design LEGO models that really move.

The Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder's Guide is filled with building tips for creating strong yet elegant machines and mechanisms with the Technic system. Author Pawel "Sariel" Kmiec will teach you the foundations of LEGO Technic building, from simple machines to advanced mechanics, even explaining how to create realistic to-scale models. Sariel, a world-renowned LEGO Technic expert, offers unique insight into mechanical principles like torque, power translation, and gear ratios, all using Technic bricks. You'll learn how to:

  • Create sturdy connections that can withstand serious stress
  • Re-create specialized LEGO pieces like casings and u-joints, and build solutions like Schmidt and Oldham couplings, when no standard piece will do
  • Build custom differentials, suspensions, transmissions, and steering systems
  • Pick the right motor for the job—and transform its properties to suit your needs
  • Combine studfull and studless building styles for a stunning look
  • Create remote-controlled vehicles, lighting systems, motorized compressors, and pneumatic engines

This beautifully illustrated, full-color book will inspire you with ideas for building amazing machines like tanks with suspended treads, supercars, cranes, bulldozers, and much more. Your Technic adventure starts now!

Comments about oreilly The Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder's Guide:

This is the first LEGO TECHNIC book I have seen that I want to read straight through from cover to cover. There are many TECHNIC books available that have good information and tips/tricks/advice, but I have always just skimmed through them and found a few pages here or there to focus on. When I first flipped through the pages of "The Unofficial LEGO TECHNIC Builder's Guide" I knew that this book was different. It combines a vast knowledge of engineering and physics with a well-organized outline and a concise writing style that allows a reader to easily follow the topics and pick up information quickly. The book applies many real world examples of mechanics (Peaucellier-Lipkin cell linkage, Schmidt couplings, etc.) and ways of modeling real world mechanisms with LEGO pieces (like instructions for a working two-cylinder pneumatic engine). The author covers aspects of durability and design that allows you to build more rugged large scale models.

The book also covers many aspects of the TECHNIC line itself, going into the history of the line and discussing the different elements and how they are designed to interact. I consider myself a fairly astute student of the TECHNIC line, but I found several facts that I never knew. The book goes into detail about the different motors, pneumatics, linear actuators, lights, gearing and etc. Also, the book provides a good mix of text and pictures/diagrams. The graphics are very well rendered and easy to follow, and the descriptions are easy to follow without being overly simplistic.

I would recommend this book for any enthusiast of LEGO TECHNIC, robotics enthusiasts, engineering students and LEGO collectors. It really is a great book both for reading cover to cover and as a reference guide.
