Comments about oreilly The LEGO Build-It Book, Vol. 1:

As a parent of young kids, we of course have Lego... lots and lots of Lego... all over the house. You'd think that would allow for lots of model building where they get more enjoyment out of following a set of instructions rather than figuring out all the mechanics of making a "cool" model. So we can either keep buying new sets ($$$) or find new instructions.

The Lego Build-It Book, Volume 1, Amazing Vehicles is the perfect resource for our situation. In this 132-page book, the authors show you how to build 10 different vehicles from one Lego kit. You can build several types of cars, a rescue truck, go-kart, and more. The instructions are presented in the same style as an "official" Lego manual, with each page showing an inventory of pieces needed and step-by-step instructions.

The base kit used in this book is #5867, the Creator Super Speedster. The set is no longer in stores, but can be found on eBay in the $20-$30 range. If you don't want to buy it there, you have a couple alternatives - you can scrounge through your existing parts (the book has a complete inventory of all parts needed in the front), visit your local Lego store's "Pick a Brick" wall, or buy individual pieces from a site like BrickLink (www.bricklink.com).

My kids have enjoyed building several of the models so far, and they've held their attention to where they don't immediately want to tear it apart and build the next one. The author was a product developer for Lego, responsible for several Technic models, so he seems to have a good grasp of building interesting models.

This book should keep us occupied far longer than a single Lego set of a similar price.

Comments about oreilly The LEGO Build-It Book, Vol. 1:

First of all I received this book free of charge from O'Reilly blogger review program for review purposes.

This book reuses parts from LEGO CREATOR Super Speedster (#5867) for creating 10 different vehicle models (well jury is still out for stroller). The book has more detailed bill of materials if you don't have the Speedster but you have other modern CREATOR sets.

The building instructions are clear (at least as clear as LEGO instructions in my youth and on more current TECHNIC models) and for me they look rather innovative. There are preview pages available at http://nostarch.com/builditvol1

Unfortunately I couldn't find the Super Speedster model from my local stores, and I've never even seen a "Pick a Brick" wall, furthermore ordering practically all parts from the net would have brought some issues with my significant other... I definitely would have loved to do these models, especially the Historic Racer.

In addition to the models there are two chapters on the design/building. The Building Basics chapter is about using imagination in seeing alternative uses for parts and about dimensions of the LEGO bricks. Advanced building has some tips on reinforcing the structures being built both on both horizontal and vertical dimensions, and also bit material about flexible joints.

Comments about oreilly The LEGO Build-It Book, Vol. 1:

When I showed the book cover to my 8-year old son, he just couldn't resist the temptation. He kept on asking me to get the book for him which I eventually did. I must say this book has made him happy and engaged.

I am glad that the book has a one-pager with a "bill of materials". That allowed me to take a printout with me and my son to the Lego shop "pick a brick" section. If you already have a couple of Lego toys for building cars, you probably don't need to buy the parts at all.

The graphics in this book are really crisp and delightful unlike the Lego manuals. The detail step by step instructions make it easy to make progress for a kid. If you have Super Speedster Item: 5867, then you don't need to buy the parts.

Have fun for hours with your kids. I loaded the ebook on my laptop and projected to my big screen TV and enjoyed with my son.

Comments about oreilly The LEGO Build-It Book, Vol. 1:

I picked up this book because my son is just now getting into LEGO. Actually, it's the bigger DUPLO blocks that he's playing with but I really wanted to get him started on actual LEGOs for Christmas this year. He loves cars and planes, especially after watching the movie Planes, and now makes all sorts of planes with his DUPLO set.
I saw this book on the O'Reilly Blogger Program and got a copy for free from them and I have to say that this is an impressive book.
For a young kid like my son, it's going to be over his head, at least the text portion, but it will be fun to work on various projects with him together and will be nice to teach him how to build his own things.
For the content of the book, I would say it's excellent. The pictures that show you step-by-step how to build each model are great. It's easy to see what you need for each step. They also give you an idea of what pieces you'll need.
I really liked that they gave you the entire BoM for the book. Basically, buy the Super Speedster set and you have everything you need. OR, they give you a piece-by-piece listing if you need to go buy specific bricks you don't have.
The entire book is well thought out and the pointers are nice too. For anyone that's into LEGO and wants to make some models with clear instructions, this is the book for you.
