Comments about oreilly Super Scratch Programming Adventure! (Covers Version 2), 2nd Edition:

I bought the first edition for my son, who was then at the age of seven. Even as he only started out with english (which is not our native language), he jumped right into it and started programming faster than I could explain basic typing skills :)
So, this way he learned programming and english in one swoop.
Now he uses the second edition, both with his scratch installation on the laptop and his very own raspberry pi scratch development installation, and is perfectly happy with it (although the examples are only mere guidelines for him ;) )

I would not only recommend it to an friend (which I more than once did already), I do use it in classes for kids from 8 years on.

In fb symbology: three thumbs up (at least)
      Best regards
      W.

Comments about oreilly Super Scratch Programming Adventure! (Covers Version 2), 2nd Edition:

I'll say up front that I received this for free through the O'Reilly review program.

Now that that is done, let's move on!

I read the first version of this book and thought it was neat what they did with it. I did a good job catering to kids and teaching them how to program. Version 2 is much the same. There are nice little examples on how to do things to get beginners started.

What I like best about these books is how there is an end goal to the programming. You learn to program in Scratch by making games. I would rather my kids not sit in front of the TV and play video games all the time but I wouldn't mind them playing a game they make themselves. It's only basic stuff here that you can make but it's something where they'll learn in the process.

I would recommend this to anyone learning the newer version of Scratch programming.

Comments about oreilly Super Scratch Programming Adventure! (Covers Version 2), 2nd Edition:

I was offered a review copy of "Super Scratch Programming Adventure!", which worked out well since my 11 year old son is very interested in Scratch. Before reading the book, my son was able to animate objects on the screen and build simple games. Although my son learned quite a bit on his own, he might have hit a plateau. After going through all of the examples in the book, almost entirely on his own, he built even more complex games and learned more advanced topics.

The book teaches you how to set costumes, play sounds, use pens, and real programming concepts, such as operators and variables. It teaches you how to write lots of different types of games while learning how to write complex programs.

The book includes lots of color graphics and easy to follow directions. There are different versions of Scratch, which require slightly different solutions than described in the book. Fortuntely, the versions are very similar. If you already have some Scratch experience, the first few sections won't be as helpful.

Scratch is one of the best ways for kids (and even some adults) to learn programming as well as object-oriented concepts. I highly recommend it.
