How Linux Works, 2nd Edition
What Every Superuser Should Know
Publisher: No Starch Press
Final Release Date: November 2014
Pages: 392

Unlike some operating systems, Linux doesn't try to hide the important bits from you—it gives you full control of your computer. But to truly master Linux, you need to understand its internals, like how the system boots, how networking works, and what the kernel actually does.

In this completely revised second edition of the perennial best seller How Linux Works, author Brian Ward makes the concepts behind Linux internals accessible to anyone curious about the inner workings of the operating system. Inside, you'll find the kind of knowledge that normally comes from years of experience doing things the hard way. You'll learn:

  • How Linux boots, from boot loaders to init implementations (systemd, Upstart, and System V)
  • How the kernel manages devices, device drivers, and processes
  • How networking, interfaces, firewalls, and servers work
  • How development tools work and relate to shared libraries
  • How to write effective shell scripts
You'll also explore the kernel and examine key system tasks inside user space, including system calls, input and output, and filesystems. With its combination of background, theory, real-world examples, and patient explanations, How Linux Works will teach you what you need to know to solve pesky problems and take control of your operating system.

Comments about oreilly How Linux Works, 2nd Edition:

I have been using Linux for a long time but I never had any formal trainnig on it. So my knowledge is mainly what I needed to know to perform tasks but there always were some gray areas that could have been filled by man-pages or Googling. This book does an excellent job as it helps me to fill these gray areas. Most of the information in this book I already know but finally I get it in some context.

This book is an excellent example why books still have their merit in an age were everything can be found on the internet: information is structured and becomes knowledge

Comments about oreilly How Linux Works, 2nd Edition:

I've been working with Linux for quite some time but I never had any formal training on it. So most of the information in this book I already know. But that is alright because there is a lot of interesting information that connects this stuff. Stuff that of course could be found in the man-pages and Wikipedia-articles. If I had known that I was looking for it and where to look for it. And then wade through details and find out what is really importnant

This book is a perfect example why books are still relevant in the internet age: because someone collects information from different sources and puts it into perspective. Thereby saving the reader time and giving him the starting point for further reading

I haven't finished the book yet. That's why I'm saving the 5th start

Comments about oreilly How Linux Works, 2nd Edition:

After 10 years of DOS and 20 years of Windows as a user, tinkerer, programmer and admin, this is the book I chose when switching to GNU/Linux one year ago. Excellent overview, coverage of infrastructure is second to none.

          Highly recommended.

Comments about oreilly How Linux Works, 2nd Edition:

"How Linux Works 2/e" presents a wealth of genuinely-useful practical information on both the user-visible side of Linux and the behind other scenes innards of the OS. The book is well-organised and systematic. Strongly recommended for someone wishing to move from a casual user of Linux to being more of a power user.

Comments about oreilly How Linux Works, 2nd Edition:

As a former Windows developer I found my Linux knowledge lacking. This book helped me get to know Linux better besides the Unix background, hacking and Googling for answers.

Bought this book to become a Linux power user without having to scrape the forums and how to-sites for useful information. Also covers basic command-line usage concisely, but I already have experience with it so that doesn't bother me.

This book lays it an out in a sensible order that builds a strong foundation first, then up from there. I feel like I'm in good hands, and will be able to handle Debian/BeagleBone with no fear after following through this book.
