Comments about oreilly Find a Job Through Social Networking , 2nd Edition:

O'Reilly is to be commended for choosing to sell ebooks by Jist Publishing. Every job seeker and entrepreneur needs to develop a strong brand and market themselves through various social media, and this excellent book takes a very comprehensive look at how to do just that.

The book begins by explaining the benefits of social networking, as well as the different types of media involved. Chapters one and two cover why you would want to network with millions of people, how different types of professionals can benefit from social networking, and how these strategies can bring success to any type of career. Chapter three discusses how to evaluate your online identity, how to rid your identity of any unwanted or embarrassing associated information, how to define your personal brand, and how to develop a strong network. At the end of this chapter, the authors describe the five different types of people that constitute a well-balanced or "full-service" network under the acronym "S.T.A.R.S." Chapter four explains the power of social networks, along with social network protocol. Each of chapters five through nine explains in great detail the different types of social media, from LinkedIn and Facebook to blogging, microblogging (Twitter) and publishing and podcasting, as well as advice on how to avoid common pitfalls. Finally, chapter ten discusses an overall strategy to grow your social networks, as well as future trends in social networking. The book is full of examples of people who have had great success implementing these strategies.

This book is an excellent read, but it is meant to be used for much more than just passive reading: As the authors state, "…keep in mind that this isn't just a book to read: It's a book to work." There are many exercises throughout the book, and they are crucial to the success of the job seeker's or entrepreneur's branding strategy. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether job seeker or business owner.
