Comments about oreilly Instant Django 1.5 Application Development Starter:

This book is for beginners for people that never read an online tutorial about Django.
Is true that most of the content can be found also online and for free but this book really guide you by hand to all the main features of Django getting you ready for the next level.
A downside is that probably the price is to high for the amount of content.

Comments about oreilly Instant Django 1.5 Application Development Starter:

The internet is a magical thing. One can discover a new technology, become engrossed in it, purchase more information, and almost immediately become disappointed.

But first, let me give just a tiny amount of background:

In 2001, at the age of 20, I purchased the book "Server Load Balancing" published by O'Reilly. Being the hotshot Linux admin that I was I decided to branch out into networking. With the past performance of tomes like "DNS and Bind" under their belt I felt assured in the quality of my acquisition.

I was wrong.

It was the worst book on computing that I had and have ever read. For the first half of "Instant Django 1.5 Application Development Starter", I thought "Server Load Balancing" had been unseated.

24 hours ago I began using Django. I immediately used the project's online tutorial and was delighted. Seeing a recent publication on the newest version focusing in a similar tutorial style I was over the moon and purchased it immediately. The first half of the book mirrors the online tutorial so closely that I sincerely hope the author was a contributor to the documentation. The near constant sense of deja vu was so strong that coming across the "render_to_response" method (versus the "render" method used in the online tutorial) I was ecstatic to see something new. It turns out that in version 1.3 (keep in mind, this was published for v1.5) "render" became a shorthand for the old method. My quickened pulse returned from giddiness to seething anger.

The second half of the book improves. It covers in more detail the minutiae of templating and handling of form data in better detail than it's online counterpart. Then again many of these facts could also be gleaned from the "advanced" tutorials.

The session handling was much appreciated and lip service to nginx and deployment were just that.

All in all I'm not so infuriated as to demand my money back. For the casual user picking this book up off the shelf at a book and mortar store (and thus not reading this review) the book would be a great companion. Anyone who cannot save the tutorial pages to their computer may find this volume essential. For those with a copy of Firefox handy you will find the competing tutorials offered gratis by the Django Project likely ample for your needs.
