    Comments about oreilly Interviewing Users:

    Hello there,

Today I will be reviewing an O'Reilly book which is kindly given to me by Blogger Review Program.

At its core Interviewing Users has an important, but often overlooked concept in our work: Users. Usually we think we build software to solve problems but we omit the part: "We build software to solve user problems". And therefore our interaction with users is the prominent, and probably the hardest, part of our jobs. We can't debug an interview or see the exception thrown in our conversations. I wish we could, it would be a lot easier.

Then again a good, structured analysis of our interaction with a user would undoubtedly return as a good analysis and a good solution. And this book allows you to do just that. It gives you a framework for structuring the interview with your user, how to ask "intelligent" questions to really understand the problem and how to document and even optimize the whole process.

But bear in mind, this book does not make you an interview expert instantly. But, to be frank, it gives you the points to look and enhance in your style of asking the questions.

I have really benefited from this and I am sure you will too.

      Comments about oreilly Interviewing Users:

The subtitle of the book is "How to uncover compelling insights". That was enough for me to get interested for a review:)
Just like the "SharePoint 2013:Planning and Governance" book was relevant for my expertise as a SharePoint consultant, this book is relevant for the part of talking to customers and getting the necessary information out of them.

The book starts with a FAQ: 5 very valid questions on interviewing that get a good answer. Examples are: "Which team member should interview users" and "we didn't learn anything new, how does that happen?". In my opinion, a few more questions could be answered about interviewing, and a better place would be at the companion website or Steve's blog. But the questions that are asked here are certainly valid and they have a good answer.

The book itself contains a plethora of experiences that the author has had in his experience interviewing users. They are sometimes funny, sometimes glowy and nice. This makes the book light to read and makes the reader feel comfortable with the book. The pictures (mostly from commercials that can relate to the stories and content) are also a part on making this book easy to read.
