Good examples

Comments about oreilly Prototype and script.aculo.us:

I received a review copy of this book, and was able to use some of the code examples to jazz up a site I was building. The examples are very well written, and the code works. If you are into programming in javascript, this book is worth a look.

Nice book, but not for the beginner

Comments about oreilly Prototype and script.aculo.us:

If you're absolutely new to Javascript libraries (like Prototype and Script.aculo.us) or even Javascript itself, this book probably isn't written for you. In my opinion, quite some experience with (mostly) Javascript is required to understand what's happening, so you might want to take a look at this book if you're already familiar with these libraries but want to go more in-depth.

The book itself is comprehensive on both libraries and most techniques used in contemporary (client-side) webdevelopment like auto-completion, sorting elements and drag-and-drop are profoundly explained. This makes the book rather a readable and comprehensive reference than a "step-by-step manual".

Readability is further enhanced because Christophe Porteneuve uses relatively little code examples, which I considered to be a pleasant experience. Other books in this category could use the balance between code examples and text in Prototype and script.aculo.us as an example.

Overall, it is a good book showing you every feature of proto and scripty and a nice addition on your bookshelf!
